Summary: This study analyzed 55 wild-grown mulberry landraces in the Van Lake basin, belonging to Morus alba, Morus rubra, and Morus nigra species, to determine their fruit characteristics. The research found that chlorogenic acid and rutin were the predominant compounds in all mulberry landraces. Malic acid was identified as the dominant organic acid among genotypes. These findings suggest that these mulberry landraces could be valuable for breeding purposes and may have potential health benefits due to their rich bioactive compounds.

Summary: The fruit of Morus alba L. (MAF) has been used as a food worldwide and in traditional medicine in East Asia for thousands of years. This study found that MAF has prokinetic activity and can enhance gastrointestinal motor function in mice and human intestines. It increased both myogenic and neurogenic contractions, resulting in accelerated intestinal transit rate (ITR). These findings suggest that MAF has potential as a new prokinetic agent.

Summary: The study elaborates inherently chiral subporphyrins by forming a fused pyran ring at the periphery, showing that the chiroptical properties can be controlled by peripheral substitution and meso-aryl substituents. The circular dichroism (CD) properties of chiral subporphyrins are largely affected by the peripheral substituents and the dihedral angles between the meso-aryl substituents and the subporphyrin core.

Summary: This study presents a method for three-dimensional magnetic measurement at atomic scale using EMCD technology, which allows for obtaining signals related to magnetization in three Cartesian directions by using a subangstrom convergent electron beam in STEM. Atomic resolution EMCD signals from all three directions can be separately acquired by moving the detector, and signal enhancement can be achieved by using a defocused electron beam.

Summary: This paper introduces a single-step printable platform for UV metasurfaces, which solves the problems of scarcity in low-loss UV materials and manufacturing limitations of high cost and low throughput. A UV-curable resin dispersed with zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) nanoparticles is developed as a printable material, which has a high refractive index and low extinction coefficient in the UV range. By utilizing nanoimprint lithography, UV metasurfaces can be fabricated in a single step. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of this method in fabricating UV metaholograms with vivid and clear holographic images. The proposed method enables repeat and rapid manufacturing of UV metasurfaces, bringing them closer to real-life applications.

Summary: This study reveals that intramolecular chirality transfer behaviors in ferrocene-conjugated amino acids depend on the substituent groups, influencing multiple intramolecular interactions and molecular geometry. The research also demonstrates that intramolecular weak forces have an impact on molecular geometry and contribute to diverse Cotton effects. This work provides evidence for the ignored intramolecular factors in self-assembled systems and paves the way for the fabrication of functional chiroptical systems.

Summary: Recently, deep reinforcement learning has gained attention in the field of metasurface design. However, the time-consuming numerical simulation has limited its adoption. In this study, a deep learning-based virtual environment proximal policy optimization method was applied to design chiral plasmonic metasurfaces with flexible targets. The well-trained agent exhibited excellent performance in designing chiral metasurfaces with optimal circular dichroism values at various target wavelengths, and the training process was remarkably fast. This approach has the potential for efficient and intelligent design of nanophotonic devices.

Summary: In this work, the transfer of chirality between a chiral metal-organic catalyst and a substrate was investigated through induced circular dichroism (ICD) studies on [Pd(Me)(2)(BINAP)]. The catalyst was successfully synthesized and characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction and CD spectroscopy, in addition to density functional theory calculations. It was demonstrated that BINAP not only acted as a steric guide during catalysis, but also influenced the electronic properties of the Pd center through ICD.

Summary: This study demonstrated the sensitization effects of Curcuma longa L. on 5-FU resistant colorectal cancer cells and established a method to identify potential sensitization agents and predict their action mechanisms before obtaining the agents. The results indicated that curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin were responsible for the effects, and two possible mechanisms, reversal of drug resistance and disruption in lactate excretion, were suggested. The compounds significantly enhanced the sensitivity of the cancer cells to 5-FU treatment, which was supported by the downregulation of drug resistance-related transporters and lactate membrane transporter.

Summary: Methuosis is a novel type of non-apoptotic cell death characterized by cytoplasmic vacuolization. This study demonstrated that EKC, a prenylated flavonoid from Epimedium koreanum, induces methuosis-like cell death in lung cancer cells and synergizes with conventional chemotherapy drugs. The regulation of Rac1 and Arf6 appears to be at least partially involved in EKC-induced methuosis.
