Rationale: Advanced ovarian malignancies are associated with poor overall survival; thus, patients often turn to alternative treatments, despite the controversy surrounding their use. Mistletoe extract has been commonly used as complementary medicine to treat patients with cancer for several decades, and has proven benefits in integrative oncology. Patient concerns: A 47-year-old woman with stage IVB ovarian cancer who underwent optimal surgical cytoreduction, but whose disease persisted after adjuvant platinum-based combination chemotherapy and 2nd-line chemotherapy. Diagnosis and interventions: The patient discontinued chemotherapy due to her septic condition and acute kidney injury accompanied by acute pyelonephritis, and opted for adjuvant treatment with mistletoe extract. Outcomes: The patient has achieved good health without progression of cancer or ascites over the 42 months since the 1st diagnosis and 24 months since the last relapse. Lessions: Our case suggests that mistletoe extract can produce favorable outcomes in patients with platinum-refractory ovarian cancer.

Risk factors for and prognosis of carboplatin-related hypersensitivity in patients with epithelial ovarian cancer

Woo Yeon Hwang, Minjung Lee, Dong Hoon Suh, Kidong Kim, Jae Hong No, Yong Beom Kim, Ju-Hyun Kim

Summary: In patients with epithelial ovarian cancer, prior use of carboplatin was identified as an independent risk factor for carboplatin-related hypersensitive reactions, while hypersensitivity to carboplatin did not impact overall survival.

Gastrointestinal/genitourinary perforation and fistula formation with or without bevacizumab in patients with previously irradiated recurrent cervical cancer: a Korean multicenter retrospective study of the Gynecologic Oncology Research Investigators Collaboration (GORILLA) group (GORILLA-1001)

Summary: This study aims to evaluate the incidence and risk factors for gastrointestinal and genitourinary fistula or perforation in recurrent cervical cancer patients who received pelvic radiation therapy. The study found that the inclusion of bevacizumab in chemotherapy regimens increases the risk of fistula/perforation formation. No other independent risk factors were identified.

Efficacy and safety of skin-adhesive low-level light therapy for overactive bladder: a Phase III study

Woo Yeon Hwang, Yong Beom Kim, Sa Ra Lee, Dong Hoon Suh, Kidong Kim, Jae Hong No

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of low-level light therapy (LLLT) device for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB). The results showed that compared to the sham group, the LLLT group had significantly reduced episodes of urge urinary incontinence (UUI) and urinary incontinence after 12 weeks of treatment, and LLLT also tended to improve the OAB symptoms and quality of life. This study suggests that LLLT may be a safe and effective treatment for OAB.

Summary: This study aimed to identify an appropriate scoring system for predicting postoperative urinary retention (POUR) after gynaecological laparoscopic surgery for benign disease. The results showed that the voiding VAS score is a simple and useful method for identifying patients at risk of POUR.

The association of pancreatic cancer incidence with smoking status and smoking amount in Korean men

Do Jin Nam, Chang-Mo Oh, Eunhee Ha, Min-Ho Kim, Eun Hye Yang, Hyo Choon Lee, Soon Su Shin, Woo Yeon Hwang, Ann Hee You, Jae-Hong Ryoo

Summary: This study examined the dose-response relationship between smoking amounts (pack-years) and the risk of developing pancreatic cancer in Korean men. The results showed that the risk of developing pancreatic cancer was higher in current smokers compared to former smokers, indicating that smoking cessation may have a protective effect.

Summary: This study analyzed the risk of gastroduodenal ulcer according to changes in smoking status for more than 5 years. The results showed that current smokers had a significantly higher risk for gastroduodenal ulcer compared to past smokers, and heavy smokers had the highest risk.

Summary: The benefits of secondary cytoreductive surgery (SCS) in recurrent ovarian cancer patients are limited to cases of complete resection. We propose limited regional platinum-sensitive recurrence (≤3 regions or limited carcinomatosis) without ascites as the optimum selection criteria for SCS.

Endometrioid carcinoma associated with ovarian endometriosis: need for cautions during treatment

Woo Yeon Hwang

Summary: This is a case report about a 38-year-old woman who presented with elevated CA 19-9 levels and was diagnosed with endometriosis that evolved into endometrioid carcinoma. The case highlights that sudden elevation of CA 19-9 level might be a sign of malignancy, small asymptomatic endometriosis should not be ignored, and incidental diagnosis of ovarian cancer should be carefully assessed by surgical staging.
