A novel and facile approach of pathogenic bacteria detection, which utilizes fluorescent sensing and bacteria capture with Magnetic carbon dots (Mag-CDs), was proposed in this work. Magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and then decorated with C-dots, and further functionalized with amine groups (chitosan). In this way, bacteria were strongly anchored on the hybrid material Mag-CDs for highly sensitive fluorescent detection. The Mag-CDs were characterized by UVevis, FT-IR spectra, TEM images, XRD, and EDX. The characterizations validate the fabrication of amine-Mag-CDs and the promising applications of this material. Fluorescence spectroscope and MALDI-MS were used for the detection and identification of bacterial strains, respectively. The limit of detection for Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was found to be 3 x 10(2) and 3.5 x 10(2) cfu mL(-1), respectively. With these encouraging results, it is expected that it would open revenues for promising applications of Mag-CDs nanomaterial. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Binding Studies of Caffeic and p-Coumaric Acid with α-Amylase: Multispectroscopic and Computational Approaches Deciphering the Effect on Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs)

Mohd Shahnawaz Khan, Majed S. Alokail, Amal Majed H. Alenad, Nojood Altwaijry, Nouf Omar Alafaleq, Abdulaziz Mohammed Alamri, Mubarak Ali Zawba

Summary: Alpha-amylase plays an important role in the management of diabetes and its complications. This study explored the binding of caffeic acid and coumaric acid with alpha-amylase and their effects on the formation of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). The results showed that both compounds could bind to alpha-amylase and inhibit the formation of AGEs. Caffeic acid exhibited stronger antiglycative activity compared to p-coumaric acid, which could be attributed to its additional -OH group and high antioxidant activity. The study also highlighted the role of hydrogen bonding in the complex formation. Molecular docking studies suggested that these compounds could be utilized in the design of antidiabetic drugs.

Summary: The use of C2 servers in cyberattacks has increased significantly, with attackers using DGA technique to hide their servers. Existing techniques for binary classification of domain names have issues with real-time detection and sensitivity to data. This paper proposes the DTFS-DGA model, which combines neural networks and traditional machine learning models to detect DGA in real-time without relying on reverse engineering and being insensitive to data size.

Redox Status, Immune Alterations, Histopathology, and Micronuclei Induction in Labeo rohita Dwelling in Polluted River Water

Nojood Altwaijry, Mohd Shahnawaz Khan, Gouse M. Shaik, Mohammad Tarique, Mehjbeen Javed

Summary: In this study, various parameters of oxidative stress, immune response, and abnormalities in the erythrocyte nucleus of Labeo rohita inhabiting the polluted Kshipra River, India, were measured. The heavy metal concentrations in the river water were in the order of Ni > Fe > Cd > Cr > Mn > Zn > Cu. The fish showed increased levels of antioxidant enzymes in gills, liver, and gut compared to the reference fish, but decreased levels of GST and GSH. Heavy metals also caused immunosuppression and histopathological changes in the fish. These findings highlight the potential impact of heavy metal-induced stress on fish inhabiting polluted river water and the importance of pollution control.

Miniaturized ascorbic acid assay platform based on point discharge atomic emission spectrometry coupling with gold filament enrichment

Yanping Wang, Yuemei Chen, Kejun Li, Jinrong Zhou, Xin Yuan, Mei Zhang, Ke Huang

Summary: In this work, a portable analytical system based on point discharge chemical vapor generation atomic emission spectrometry (PD-CVG-AES) coupling with gold filament enrichment was designed. The highly sensitive analysis of Hg2+ indirectly realized the detection of ascorbic acid (AA). The measurement is based on the fact that Ag+ can decrease the concentration of Hg2+ by forming Ag-Hg amalgam in the presence of the reductant SnCl2, while AA can pre-reduce Ag+ to Ag0, leading to the generation of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs). The developed novel analytical strategy broadens the application of microplasma-based AES and offers a higher level of sensitivity compared to current AA detection techniques.
