Timeliness of diagnosis and treatment: the challenge of childhood cancers

Callum J. R. Mullen, Ronald D. Barr, Eduardo L. Franco

Summary: Cancer is a significant cause of disease-related death in children globally, but advancements in treatment and understanding have improved survival rates. Factors at individual, community, and systemic levels can impact childhood cancer experiences, yet risk-based surveillance programs have shown promise in enhancing outcomes.

Bone health in long-term survivors of pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia. An assessment by peripheral quantitative computed tomography

Ronald D. Barr, Dean Inglis, Uma Athale, Maciej Jaworski, Troy Farncombe, Christopher L. Gordon

Summary: Long-term survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have compromised bone health to some extent, especially in high-risk survivors who received more intensive osteotoxic chemotherapy. The bone connectivity in these survivors is lower in females compared to males, but factors such as history of fracture, cranial irradiation, or bisphosphonate use do not show significant differences in bone metrics.

Efficacy of ready-to-use therapeutic food in malnourished children with cancer: Results of a randomized, open-label phase 3 trial

Maya Prasad, Sneha Tandon, Rajul Gala, Sadhna Kannan, Girish Chinnaswamy, Gaurav Narula, Tushar Vora, Shripad Banavali, Shaesta Mehta, Amey Paradkar, Savita Goswami, Meera Ghadge, Deepak Jagiasi, Sujata Sharma, Lavina Fernandes, Mamta Manglani, Alka Jadhav, Ronald Barr, Elena Ladas

Summary: The study shows that ready-to-use therapeutic food (RUTF) is effective in improving the nutritional status of children with cancer and reducing treatment-related toxicities (TRTs). Children who received RUTF had greater weight gain, improved nutritional status, and lower chances of developing TRTs within 6 months.

Summary: A prediction model for identifying pediatric ALL patients with low LS BMD at diagnosis, as an important indicator for bone fragility, was successfully developed and validated, facilitating the identification of future bone fragility in individual pediatric ALL patients.

Reference centile curves for mid-upper arm circumference for assessment of under- and overnutrition in school-aged Indian children and adolescents

Anuradha V. Khadilkar, Vaman V. Khadilkar, Ketan M. Gondhalekar, Neha A. Kajale, Priya H. Karkera, Maya Prasad, Amita Trehan, Ronald D. Barr, Elena J. Ladas

Summary: This study aimed to construct age-and sex-specific MUAC reference centiles for Indian children aged 5 to 17 years and define cutoffs for assessing undernutrition and overnutrition. By observing 6680 healthy children, cutoffs for thinness and obesity were proposed for different age groups, providing valuable screening tools for malnutrition in children.

Adiposity in Survivors of Cancer in Childhood: How is it Measured and Why Does it Matter?

Louise Guolla, Katherine M. Morrison, Ronald D. Barr

Summary: Survivors of childhood cancer often experience long-term health impacts, including metabolic and cardiovascular diseases. Changes in body composition, such as an increase in fat mass and a decrease in muscle mass, may contribute to the development of chronic diseases.

Relationships of Bone Mineral Density to Whole Body Mass, Fat Mass and Fat-free Mass in Long-term Survivors of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in Childhood

Uma H. Athale, Christopher J. C. Marriott, Amy Cranston, Paula McDonald, Colin E. Webber, Troy H. Farncombe, Ronald D. Barr

Summary: Body size is a significant factor influencing bone mineral density in health. Research shows that body mass index and fat-free mass are closely related to bone density in males, while appendicular lean mass has a significant correlation with bone mineral density in males, suggesting the importance of body composition in maintaining bone health.
