Lost circulation materials (LCMs) are available in a great variety of materials, sizes, and can vary in the method of application. Selecting the right LCM and treatment for the job is critical in achieving the successful control of the lost circulation event. After reading a good number of papers and case histories regarding lost circulation materials and treatments and comparing the current classification to actual real field data, a large gap was found in the current calcification of lost circulation materials and treatments. An updated classification of lost circulation materials and treatments was provided based on the type of losses and applications. Data were collected on both LCM and applications from various number of sources in the Basra area of Iraq where drilling operations are highly susceptible to lost circulation in the Dammam, Hartha and Shuaiba formations. After analyzing the data, the best lost circulation treatments and materials to treat seepage, partial, severe, and complete losses in Basra oil fields were provided as a flowchart accomplished by practical guidelines that can serve as a reference material for the drilling personnel when responding to lost circulation in the field. This paper will also discuss methods that are used to ameliorate lost circulation without the use of traditional lost circulation materials. Example of the alternative approaches include discussions of blind drilling and foaling mud cap drilling using case histories from the Basra fields. The results of this analysis provide a path forward for effectively and systematically using lost circulation materials and treatments in the Basra area. The methodologies presented in this work can be adapted and used to treat lost circulation worldwide.

Improving hole cleaning in horizontal wells by using nanocomposite water-based mud

Ahmed K. Abbas, Mortadha T. Alsaba, Mohammed F. Al Dushaishi

Summary: This study investigates the use of silica nanoparticles to improve hole cleaning in extended reach drilling operations, finding that silica nanoparticles can significantly enhance cuttings removal efficiency, especially at higher concentrations. Through experiments on laminar, transition, and turbulent flow states, the importance of silica nanoparticles in enhancing the cuttings transport efficiency of water-based drilling fluids is demonstrated.

Comprehensive Experimental Investigation of Hole Cleaning Performance in Horizontal Wells Including the Effects of Drill String Eccentricity, Pipe Rotation, and Cuttings Size

Summary: This study aims to identify the main parameters affecting the cleaning performance in horizontal well sections and through experimental research, it has been found that drill string rotation and flowrate have the greatest influence on the removal of cuttings, while drill pipe eccentricity has a negative impact on efficiency. It was also observed that larger cuttings are easier to remove.

Stick-slip investigation of dual drilling and reaming bottom hole assembly

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of bottom hole assembly for dual reaming and drilling operation, focusing on the stick-slip vibrations caused by the contact of the reamer and the bit with the formation. A coupled vibration model representing the drillstring is used to simulate the stick-slip vibrations caused by the dual-action of the reamer and the bit, showing elevated vibrations. Sensitivity analysis indicates that cutter aggressiveness for the bit and the reamer are key parameters affecting stick-slip behavior.

Improving drilling performance through optimizing controllable drilling parameters

Summary: Predicting the rate of penetration (ROP) is crucial for optimizing drilling operations and reducing costs. Controllable parameters such as weight on bit (WOB), revolutions per minute, and flow rate (FR) have a significant impact on ROP. By optimizing these parameters, drilling performance can be improved leading to cost savings.
