Summary: Hypothermia and hyperthermia are prevalent in mothers undergoing emergency caesarean section, with rates of 10.7% and 14.7% respectively. The type of anesthesia used also influenced the prevalence of temperature abnormalities. Maternal temperature decreased from delivery to admission to the recovery room, highlighting the importance of accurate temperature measurement and management strategies.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the impact of major postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) on women and their partners. Through qualitative interviews, it was found that factors such as incomprehensible medical terminology, a tense atmosphere, and alarm calls increased concern in women and their partners. However, small gestures such as brief explanations from healthcare professionals and reassurance that they were in control of the situation can increase their feeling of safety. Furthermore, family bonding can be supported through measures such as positioning the partner at the head of the bed and keeping the baby on the woman's chest.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the relationship between maternal PFAS exposure during pregnancy and the risk of postpartum haemorrhage. The results showed that exposure to perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) increased the risk of postpartum haemorrhage, while exposure to perfluorododecanoic acid (PFDoA) was inversely associated with the risk. Additionally, the concentrations of perfluoroundecanoic acid (PFUnA) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) were positively correlated with the amount of postpartum haemorrhage. The risk of postpartum haemorrhage also increased with increasing exposure to a mixture of PFASs.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the experiences of midwives in rural maternity care settings in Nigeria in order to provide appropriate support and improve practice. The study found that midwives employed various strategies to prevent and manage postpartum haemorrhage, but faced challenges such as inadequate resources. The midwives identified the need for continuing education and training to enhance their standards of care.

Summary: This study investigated the association between anesthesia methods (general anesthesia and neuraxial anesthesia) during cesarean section and the risk of postpartum depression. The results showed that women who underwent general anesthesia had a higher risk of depressive disorders and a higher need for antidepressants to address sleep problems.

Summary: This article discusses the conflict in maternal request caesarean sections (MRCS) and emphasizes the need for reform in MRCS counseling. The author argues against labeling MRCS as having "no anticipated medical benefit" and advocates for open conversation to ensure access to MRCS for birthing people that need it.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to assess the risks of perinatal mortality and morbidity associated with vaginal delivery versus elective caesarean in breech presentations. The results showed that vaginal delivery had higher risks of perinatal mortality, birth trauma, and low Apgar scores compared to planned caesarean. However, the risk of severe maternal morbidity due to complications of a planned caesarean was slightly higher.

Summary: This study evaluated the effectiveness of tranexamic acid (TXA) in reducing blood loss during elective caesarean sections in women with and without risk factors for postpartum haemorrhage (PPH). The results showed that women who received prophylactic TXA had significantly lower blood loss compared with those receiving placebo. The greatest effect was seen in women at high risk for PPH, and subgroup analysis showed benefit for women with preoperative haemoglobin < 10.5 g/dL. There were no significant differences in additional medical or surgical interventions, and no adverse outcomes for mothers or neonates.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of a postpartum navigation program in reducing postpartum hospitalizations and hospitalizations due to severe maternal morbidity. The program provided standardized assessments, care plans, clinical management, and connection to services for high-risk women. Results showed that enrollees had lower rates of rehospitalization and severe maternal morbidity compared to nonenrollees, with the greatest reductions seen among Black women.

Summary: Postpartum readmissions are an important marker of maternal morbidity after hospital childbirth. Most readmissions do not have evidence of severe maternal morbidity. This study found that in addition to severe maternal morbidity at delivery, other factors such as mental health issues, chronic hypertension, and pre-pregnancy diabetes were associated with readmissions.

Summary: Pregnancy complicated with uncorrected Ebstein's anomaly is uncommon and may pose a serious threat to maternal and foetal life. Management of such pregnancies is challenging and requires a multidisciplinary team approach to improve outcomes. Ebstein's anomaly may become symptomatic for the first time during pregnancy, highlighting the importance of close monitoring and specialized care.

Summary: This study assesses the incidence of postpartum depression, maternal confidence about parenting, and maternal-infant bonding characteristics in first-time mothers. The results suggest that first-time mothers have good confidence in the transition to motherhood, but a significant proportion of women experience difficulties in maternal-infant bonding, especially those with moderate to severe depression.

Summary: One in ten pregnancies with portal hypertension is diagnosed during pregnancy, with thrombocytopenia being the most common complication. Maternal deaths are most often due to variceal bleeding or hepatic decompensation, with reduced rates of bleeding and complications following endoscopic procedures during pregnancy. Risk of postpartum hemorrhage is higher in CPH compared to NCPH, while variceal bleeding is lower. Risk of various outcomes is comparable between NCPF and EHPVO.

Summary: Tuberculosis is a significant cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality globally. The increasing migration has led to a rise in tuberculosis cases among pregnant women or during the postpartum period in resource-rich countries. Diagnosis may be delayed as the symptoms overlap with those of pregnancy. Timely diagnosis is crucial to initiate appropriate treatment and prevent adverse outcomes for both the mother and baby.

Summary: This prospective cohort study aimed to assess the impact of maternal near-miss on late maternal death and the prevalence of hypertension or chronic kidney disease (CKD) and mental health problems. The study was conducted in a tertiary hospital in India, enrolling maternal near-miss cases with 12 months of follow-up. The results showed that the incidence of maternal near-miss was 6.7 per 1000 live births, with 7.2% experiencing late maternal deaths, 23.0% having CKD, 56.2% having hypertension, and only two women showing depression during follow-up. Serum creatinine was independently associated with late maternal death and CKD. The study concludes that women who survive life-threatening complications during pregnancy and childbirth are at increased risk of mortality and long-term sequelae, urging the need for a policy shift to increase postpartum follow-up duration, targeting high-risk cases after a near-miss event.

Summary: De novo or as a continuum of antenatal hypertension, postpartum hypertension affects about 2% of pregnancies and can lead to maternal complications. This study compared the effectiveness of oral Labetalol and oral Amlodipine in controlling blood pressure in postpartum women. The results showed that Amlodipine achieved sustained blood pressure control faster and had fewer hypertensive emergencies compared to Labetalol. However, more women in the Amlodipine group still required antihypertensive medication at discharge. No drug-related side effects were observed. (CTRI/2020/02/023236).
