Climate plays an important role in crop production, and it is the main factor limiting the success of crop production in specific area. Medicinal plants are characterized by its contents of biological active substances. Among those, essential oil is considered as one of the most important natural substances. This field experiment was conducted during the two successive seasons 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 in order to evaluate the growth, yield and essential oil constituents of chervil plants at four different locations across Egypt (El-Fayoum, El-Minya, El-Sharkia, and El-Baharia Oasis). Plants cultivated in El-Fayoum showed the highest growth rate (plant height) and the highest yield (fresh and dry herb) followed by El-Sharkia. Also, the highest quality (0.180 and 0.185 % essential oil with 0.158 and 0.120 ml/plant in first and second season, respectively) was observed on plant cultivated in El-Fayoum and the lowest observed in El-Baharia Oasis plants. Thirteen main compounds were detected in GC/MS analysis of essential oil. There were obvious differences in chemical constituents of essential oil of plants cultivated under different locations. The lowest Methyleugenol, Estragoleand 2-Allyl-1,4-dimethoxybenzenecontents were observed in plant cultivated in El-Minya location. The highest Methyleugenol content (47.21 %) was observed in El-Sharkia, the highest Estragole content (18.04) were observed in El-Fayoum, and the highest 2-Allyl-1,4-dimethoxybenzene content (7.89) was observed in El-Baharia Oasis. The results of this study suggested that agro-climatic zone and suitable location selection could be as important strategies for maximizing the content and composition of essential oils.

Summary: The study found that nano zinc and bio-stimulants have positive effects on the growth, yield, and quality of roselle plants, with the best results achieved under 10 ppm of nano zinc and seaweed extract. Significant positive correlations were observed among calyxes yield and anthocyanin, zinc content, as well as other growth traits and photosynthetic pigments.

Summary: The study identified considerable additive genetic variation for heat tolerance among the 72 progeny arrays generated from crosses in perennial ryegrass, highlighting the potential for using such diversity to improve heat tolerance in plant cultivars. Furthermore, combining physiological measurements within a genetic framework was found beneficial in assessing the inheritance of heat tolerance, a complex plant response.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of phosphate and potassium fertilization on the growth characteristics and oil quality of Crambe plants. The results showed that both potassium and phosphorus fertilization significantly increased the vegetative growth traits and fixed oil content. However, they had opposite effects on the main components of Crambe oil, with potassium fertilization increasing erucic acid content and phosphorus fertilization decreasing it.

Summary: This study showed that growing turmeric between rows of unpruned leucaena trees resulted in the highest plant growth, yield, and characteristics. Additionally, adding 34 m³/ha of organic compost increased the growth, yield, and quality of turmeric. The combination of organic compost addition and alley cropping is an effective and sustainable agro-ecological system for enhancing turmeric output and quality.

Four Invasive Plant Species in Southwest Saudi Arabia Have Variable Effects on Soil Dynamics

Ahmed M. Abbas, Wagdi S. Soliman, Maryam M. Alomran, Nahaa M. Alotaibi, Stephen J. Novak

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of four invasive plant species on soil dynamics. The results showed that although these invasive plants had some effects on soil properties, ions, and microelements, most of the parameters did not show significant changes. This suggests that the impact of invasive plants on soil dynamics varies depending on the invasive species and the invaded habitat.

The Impact of Irrigation Intervals and NPK/Yeast on the Vegetative Growth Characteristics and Essential Oil Content of Lemongrass

Nourhan Mahmoud, Mahmoud A. H. Abdou, Sabri Salaheldin, Wagdi S. Soliman, Ahmed M. Abbas

Summary: The growth and quality of medicinal plants are significantly affected by environmental stress, particularly water shortages. This research investigated the impact of varying irrigation intervals and partial replacement of mineral fertilizers with biofertilizer on the growth, yield, and essential oil content of lemongrass. The study found that drought and reduced NPK levels led to decreased growth characteristics and leaf greenness, but increased proline content and essential oil percentage. It is recommended to reduce mineral fertilizer to 50-75% NPK combined with biofertilizer and space irrigation intervals every 10-15 days to achieve high essential oil yield and maintain productivity under environmental constraints.
