Summary: This study reported a case of a 19-year-old woman who developed astasia-abasia syndrome after a hanging attempt. PET scan revealed hypometabolism in the left cerebral hemisphere, striatum bodies, thalamus, and cerebellum. Reliable clinical diagnostic data are provided in this article.

Summary: Falls are common health problems faced by the elderly, and contribute significantly to their morbidity. This case report describes a middle-aged lady with psychogenic astasia-abasia, which is uncommon in Singapore. The patient received a multidisciplinary level of care, including physiotherapy and psycho-education, and showed good response. The article also provides a non-systematic literature review on the description and management of this condition.

Summary: Functional gait disorders (FGDs) can be found in patients with functional motor disorders (FMDs), who typically exhibit different types of FGDs and may occur at older age. The association of FGDs with functional visual symptoms and somatic symptoms disorder helps to advance the understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying these disorders.

Summary: Paul Blocq and Jean-Martin Charcot introduced the term astasia-abasia in 1888 to describe a pathology they believed to be caused by hysteria. This condition prevents patients from remaining upright and walking, while their ability to move their legs while lying down remains unaffected. Over time, astasia-abasia has been recognized as a syndrome with various organic causes, and its history has helped advance our understanding of human bipedalism.

Summary: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is a prevalent, disabling, and costly condition at the neurology-psychiatry intersection. Recent advances in diagnosis, mechanisms, aetiologies, treatments, and stigma have been made in the past decade, but challenges still remain. Despite this, a patient-centered integrated clinical neuroscience approach is poised to continue the momentum of the past decade into the future.

Summary: Functional neurological disorder (FND) is often overlooked and misunderstood by clinicians, despite being a common and accurately diagnosable condition based on clinical signs. People with FND face discrimination from healthcare providers, researchers, and the public, reflecting the neglect of disorders primarily affecting women. We argue that FND is a feminist issue, drawing on historical and contemporary perspectives from clinical, research, and social domains. We call for equal attention and support for FND in medical education, research, and clinical services to ensure adequate care for those affected.

Summary: Limited guidance exists for the assessment and management of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) in children. This study developed consensus-based recommendations through a scoping review and expert Delphi process. Video electroencephalography (vEEG) was the main method of PNES identification, and children with PNES were found to have higher rates of psychiatric disorders. Recommendations were made for comprehensive assessment, involvement of epilepsy experts in management, provision of educational materials, and screening for comorbidities.

Summary: Stroke is a major cause of illness and death worldwide, and hemorrhagic transformation is a serious complication of ischemic stroke. Current treatments for acute ischemic stroke, such as endovascular thrombectomy and thrombolytic therapy, increase the risk of hemorrhagic conversion. The timely diagnosis and management of patients with hemorrhagic conversion are crucial for patient outcomes. This review aims to discuss the pathophysiology, risk factors, imaging considerations, and treatment of hemorrhagic conversion in acute ischemic stroke.

Summary: This study assessed how clinicians discussed the diagnosis of somatic symptom and related disorders (SSRDs) in patients admitted to a children's hospital and explored the effect of parent and patient acceptance of the diagnosis on recovery. The results showed that full parent acceptance of the diagnosis was associated with complete functional recovery in their children, highlighting the importance of therapeutic engagement with families.

Summary: The study aimed to assess the role of childhood trauma in differentiating MDD and BD, as well as to describe the conversion rate from MDD to BD and its predictors. Findings indicated that predictors of conversion to BD included lower education, substance abuse, younger age of onset, and family history, while childhood trauma was not a significant risk factor for conversion.

Summary: Functional neurological disorders (FND) are a common cause of functional disorders (FD) and there has been a proliferation of terms used to describe these disorders over the years. The study found a dynamic and evolving use of these terms over the past 60 years, with certain terms gaining or losing popularity. Functional neurological disorder showed the highest citation impact in recent highly cited publications. However, a precise, explanatory, and non-offensive term is yet to be found.
