Summary: Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is an autoimmune disorder characterized by organ and tissue fibrosis. This study aimed to evaluate the stiffness markers, augmentation index (AIx) and pulse wave velocity (PWV), in SSc patients. The results showed that SSc patients had increased AIx but decreased PWV compared to controls. Age and BMI were found to be correlated with PWV.

Summary: This study assessed the awareness and response to acute myocardial infarction (AMI) among the general population in Alahssa, Saudi Arabia. The findings showed that 74.1% of the participants had good knowledge levels, with calling an ambulance recognized as the initial response to AMI symptoms by 53.2%. Internet and healthcare professionals were the primary sources of information. Sudden pain or discomfort in arms or hands was the most recognized symptom. Obesity and heart disease were the most common risk factors. The study highlights the need to enhance public awareness of AMI, particularly among specific demographic groups.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the value of detecting subclinical myocardial impairment in SSc patients using myocardial strain obtained from speckle tracking echocardiography (STE). The results showed that SSc patients had lower myocardial strain than healthy controls, indicating the presence of impaired myocardium involving both the ventricle and atrium.

Summary: Recent studies have shown differences in intestinal microbiota composition in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) compared to healthy individuals, which may disrupt the intestinal barrier and lead to immunological activation. This study aimed to compare intestinal permeability between SSc patients and controls and investigate the correlation between permeability and complications. The study found that SSc patients had significantly higher lipopolysaccharide (LPS) levels compared to controls, with shorter disease duration associated with increased LPS and claudin-3 levels. Additionally, SSc patients with esophageal dysmotility had lower LPS levels. Increased intestinal permeability in SSc may worsen the disease and increase the risk of complications.

Summary: This study visualized the trajectories of pulmonary arterial pressure (PAP) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) using latent trajectory modeling and identified distinct clinical phenotypes for each trajectory. The study found that the pattern of PAP changes in SSc can be classified into five trajectories with different clinical characteristics and outcomes.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the incidence and risk factors of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). A nationwide cohort study was conducted in Taiwan, including 1379 SSc patients and 2758 non-SSc individuals. The study found that SSc was associated with increased risk of myocardial infarction and peripheral arterial occlusion disease, but not of ischaemic stroke. Age, gender, residential area, valvular heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and the use of clopidogrel and aspirin were identified as independent risk factors for MACEs in SSc patients. The findings of this study are clinically significant in understanding the risk factors for MACEs in SSc patients.

Summary: This study compared the salivary flow rate and oral status of patients with primary Sjogren's Syndrome (pSS) and diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis (dcSSc) with control subjects. The results showed that both pSS and dcSSc patients had lower salivary flow rates, lower salivary pH values, higher DMFT index, and poorer oral and periodontal health compared to the control group. Additionally, the interincisal distance was smaller and the oral health-related quality of life was poorer in pSS and dcSSc patients.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the cross-sectional relationships between excess modifiable cardiovascular risk (CVR) and whole and regional brain atrophy as well as disability in patients with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS). The results showed that prematurely achieved CVR was associated with smaller brain volumes and poorer working memory performance in SPMS patients.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the concentration of salusins in sera of patients with SSc and healthy controls, and evaluate correlations between salusin levels and clinical parameters. The results showed that salusin-alpha levels were significantly elevated in SSc patients receiving vasodilators and immunosuppressants. This finding may be associated with the initiation of atheroprotective processes in SSc patients.

Summary: This study aims to compare the prevalence of comorbidities in women versus men hospitalised with gout in Spain. Women with gout were significantly older and had a higher prevalence of obesity, dyslipidaemia, chronic kidney disease, diabetes mellitus, heart failure, dementia, urinary tract infection, and concurrent rheumatic disease. A decision tree algorithm was constructed to predict the sex of patients with gout based on age and comorbidities alone.

Summary: This study assessed the associations between fruit consumption and cardiometabolic risk factors in elderly individuals with metabolic syndrome. It found that higher total fruit consumption was associated with lower waist circumference, fasting glucose levels, and LDL-cholesterol, but higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels. Additionally, the associations varied based on the color of fruits consumed.

Summary: The study revealed an increasing trend in the prevalence of chronic diseases among adult cancer survivors in the United States, with a substantial increase in the number of survivors with comorbid illnesses over the past 2 decades. Additionally, the prevalence of MCC was more pronounced among survivors aged 18 to 44 years.

Summary: Despite a decrease in overall incidence, nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) still poses a significant health burden on Asian Americans (AAs), a fast-growing but understudied racial group in the United States. This study examined racial/ethnic disparities in NPC incidence, treatment, and mortality among different AA subgroups. The findings highlight the importance of considering AA subgroups in future studies to understand the role of ethnicity in NPC and promote culturally tailored cancer prevention and care.
