Summary: This study reviewed long-term outcomes of a large cohort of children who underwent nasal septoplasty and compared those under and over 14 years old. Younger patients underwent revision surgery more frequently, but there was no significant difference in complication rates between the two age groups. Further retrospective studies are needed to validate the use of nasal septoplasty in the pediatric population.

Summary: Septoplasty is a common surgical procedure for treating septal deviation. This study aimed to identify factors associated with failure of primary septoplasty, evaluate corrective techniques, and measure surgical outcomes. Seventy-four adults who underwent revision septoplasty for persistent septal deviations were enrolled. The study found that primary septoplasties were often performed in primary and secondary hospitals, C-shaped deviations were more common, and the caudal septum was the most common site of persistent deviation. Surgical techniques, such as excision and cartilage suturing, were used to correct the deviations. The VAS score improved significantly after surgery, indicating symptom improvement.

Summary: Pathology examination of septoplasty specimens is often unnecessary and wasteful, as it rarely yields unexpected or significant findings that would change management. A value-based approach should be used to justify the need for pathology evaluation based on the patient's presentation and intraoperative findings, leading to potential cost savings. National reimbursements for septoplasty histopathology are estimated to be considerably higher than current Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reimbursement rates.

Summary: Septoplasty in pediatric patients improves nasal obstruction and quality of life, as demonstrated by both objective and subjective measurements. Further high-level studies are required to validate these findings.

Summary: Nasal air conditioning is an essential function of the nasal cavity and can be altered by deviated nasal septum (DNS). The importance of nasal air conditioning in pre-septoplasty planning has not been well studied. This study investigates the alteration in nasal air conditioning in seventeen DNS patients using virtual septoplasty and image-based CFD modeling. The results show that DNS leads to asymmetric distribution of water mass fraction and temperature, causing local drying of the mucosal layer.

Summary: There has been skepticism surrounding septoplasty in children, but recent studies suggest it can be a lifesaving procedure. A review of literature from 2000 to 2020 found that conventional endonasal septoplasty was effective and safe in treating deviated nasal septum in children aged 4 to 17 years.

Summary: The study investigated the Quick septoplasty technique in 111 Caucasian children aged 6-13 years, showing significant improvements in nasal breathing resistances, NOSE questionnaire scores, cephalometric parameters, and dental parameters postoperatively. The technique was found to be practical, conservative, and offered favorable long-term results for correcting nasal septum deviations in children, promoting physiological and harmonious development of craniofacial and dental structures in offspring.

Summary: The study demonstrated that septoplasty using a modified mattress suture technique effectively improved the angles and cross-sectional areas (CSAs) of the internal nasal valve (INV). The technique increased the angles and CSAs on the narrow side of the INV while decreasing them on the wide side, leading to a ratio closer to 1. Patients' subjective nasal symptoms also significantly improved after the surgery.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the clinical utility of imaging assessment in symptomatic nasal septal deviation across all levels of medical training. Results showed that otolaryngologists had difficulty identifying symptomatic NSD patients and often misidentified healthy controls. The study suggests that obstructive symptoms cannot be reliably inferred based on the degree of NSD on CT scans.

Summary: Functional and aesthetic nasal operations significantly improve olfaction, which is directly correlated with nasal airflow and quality of life. Some studies report a transient worsening of these measures in the immediate postoperative period, which subsequently improved at later time points.

Summary: The study aimed to compare the perioperative complications and postoperative nasal obstruction between conventional septoplasty and endoscopic septoplasty. The endoscopic technique showed lower risks of surgical complications and lower postoperative nasal obstruction, which varied with the follow-up periods. The functional assessment scores and quality of life were similar between the two approaches.

Summary: This discussion critically evaluates the paper on ''Video-assisted septo-rhinoplasty, the future of endonasal rhinoplasty-A Technical Note.'' It recognizes the advantages of the endoscopic technique, such as improved visibility and surgical teaching, but also explores obstacles such as limited visibility, steep learning curve, and difficulties in precision and accuracy. It emphasizes the importance of surgical adaptability and tailoring techniques to meet individual patient considerations. The innovation and dedication of the original authors are applauded, and their continued advancement in this field is anticipated.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the olfactory status in children with laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 using subjective and psychophysical methods. The results showed that smell impairment was detected in a majority of children immediately after confirmation of COVID-19, but there was a trend towards quick recovery of olfactory function within the first month for most patients.
