Summary: We present the positive health service outcomes observed in our university teaching hospital dermatology department during a 45-month period of advice and guidance (A&G) utilization. The study showed reduced discharges at first attendance and a referral-to-treatment performance above the national average. We encourage other NHS dermatology departments to implement A&G as a triaging tool.

Summary: This study reconstructs a 14,000-year history of paleoenvironmental change in Lake Simcoe, Ontario, using proxy data from ostracod valves in lake sediments. The research reveals that the delivery of meltwater from Lake Algonquin to Lake Simcoe began to slow around 12,050 years ago. It also suggests the occurrence of an isolated pulse of 16O-rich water from Early Lake Mattawa between 10,699 and 10,591 years ago. Furthermore, a pronounced transition from cold and dry to wet and warm conditions is observed around 8,200 years ago.

Summary: The COVID-19 era has had a significant negative impact on various aspects of people's lives, including social, working, and relational aspects. The home isolation and fear of infection have resulted in a large number of psychological consequences. To ensure continuous care, hospitals have implemented teledermatology services, including psychological video consultations. This study reports the experience of 23 psychological video consultations conducted during the COVID-19 era, which significantly reduced the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) in patients with chronic skin conditions.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the monocentric liver transplantation experience to identify the pre-operatively available parameters limiting a 10-year post-transplant survival. The study found that there were differences in initial liver function, surgical techniques, and immunosuppression between the short surviving group (< 10 years) and the long surviving group (& GE; 10 years). Age, transplantation era, and UNOS status 1-2A were identified as independent risk factors for not reaching at least 10 years of follow-up.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the independent relevance of general adiposity (body mass index), central adiposity (waist circumference), and body composition (fat mass index and fat-free mass index) with carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT). The study found that fat-free mass index was the adiposity measure most strongly associated with CIMT, while waist circumference was completely attenuated. Therefore, screening for subclinical atherosclerosis should evaluate carotid plaques in addition to CIMT.

Summary: This study investigated the monthly and seasonal variation in adult osteoporotic fragility fractures and found different types of fractures present different seasonal patterns. The results showed that temperature and days of frost were directly associated with fractures, highlighting the potential role of weather in modulating fracture seasonality and healthcare utilization.

Summary: This study characterized a cohort of SLE patients over 40 years, analyzing changes in demographic, clinical, serological, and histological patterns. While there were shifts in ethnicity and disease characteristics, the 5-year mortality rates and progression to end-stage renal disease have stabilized in the last 20 years. New therapeutic approaches and strategies to enhance adherence are needed to further improve outcomes for SLE patients.

Summary: Researchers found that patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) had a 46% increased risk of any fracture up to 40 years after diagnosis. While there was no overall increased risk in males, both males and females with AN had a particularly high risk of site-specific fractures in the spine and femur. Fracture risk decreased in recent decades, possibly due to the diagnosis and intervention of less severe cases of AN.

Summary: In this study, the spatial distribution and seasonal variations of clear-sky aerosol direct radiative forcing (ADRF) over China from 1981 to 2020 were systematically investigated. The results show that ADRFs in China are strongest in spring, moderate in summer and fall, and weakest in winter. The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta and Tarim Basin exhibit distinctive seasonal and monthly patterns of ADRFs. Additionally, the study found a strong correlation between aerosol optical thickness and ADRFs, and dust has a significant impact on the clear-sky shortwave ADRF.

Summary: Psychosis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus is rare but treatable. Certain immunological characteristics may be associated with the development of lupus psychosis. However, no significant biomarkers were found in this small sample, indicating a need for further exploration in a larger multi-centre analysis.

Summary: Kenya's wildlife, especially predators and scavengers, has been declining significantly, impacting ecosystem services. Protected areas are crucial for preserving raptor populations, but specific threats like electrocution, poisoning, and habitat degradation have led to declines. Enhanced management of protected areas, mitigation of threats, and species recovery plans are needed to reverse the situation.

Summary: This study describes the use cases and impact on referrals of EstomatoNet, an online service for supporting the diagnosis and decision-making of oral lesions. The findings show that the use of EstomatoNet improves support for primary health care professionals in managing oral mucosal lesions and reduces the need for specialized referrals.
