We investigated the hepatoprotective potential of Ferula communis extract for CCI4 induced liver damage. We used six groups of rats: group 1, untreated control; group 2, CCl4 treated (hepatotoxic); group 3, treated with 150 mg/kg F. communis; group 4, treated with 300 mg/kg F. communis; group 5, treated with CCl4+150 mg/kg F. communis; and group 6, treated with CCl4+300 mg/kg F. communis. Liver damage was produced by injection of 1 ml/kg CCI4 twice/week. Extracts of F. communis, 150 and 300 mg/kg/day, were administered for 8weeks. The effects of F. communis were assessed by measuring aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and total bilirubin (T-BIL) levels, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in the liver. The histology and immunohistochemistry of liver tissue were evaluated using hematoxylin and eosin staining, and caspase 3 and 8-OHdG immunostaining. F. communis extract produced significant reductions in elevated levels of ALT, AST, GGT and T-BIL and increased levels of GPx and SOD in rats treated with CCl4. F. communis extract decreased CCl4 induced 8-OHdG formation and caspase 3 activation significantly in hepatocytes, especially at the 150 mg/kg dose. Our findings demonstrate the potential efficacy of F. communis for attenuating CCl4 induced hepatotoxicity and oxidative damage.

An evaluation of ischaemia-modified albumin levels in the development of diabetic foot ulcer

Handan Alay, Esra Laloglu, Fatma Kesmez Can

Summary: The study found a significant positive correlation between serum IMA levels and the severity of DFU in diabetic patients, suggesting that high IMA levels may indicate a higher risk for DFU development. In addition, IMA levels were positively correlated with CRP, ESR, WBC, fasting plasma glucose, and HbA1c, while serum albumin levels were negatively correlated with IMA, CRP, ESR, and WBC values.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of serum surfactant-D (SP-D) and angiopoetin-2 (Ang-2) in predicting the severity of COVID-19 patients. The results showed that SP-D and Ang-2 levels were significantly higher in patients with more severe pneumonia, and they can serve as predictive factors in differentiating COVID-19 patients and determining disease severity.

Summary: Endocan is an inflammatory biomarker that is associated with the prediction and clinical severity of COVID-19 disease. Serum endocan levels can be used as an assistant diagnostic tool in patients with false-negative RT-PCR results and in determining the severity of the disease.

Summary: This study found that BAL VASH-1 levels were lower in lung cancer patients compared to those with benign lung diseases, with a moderate positive correlation between serum and BAL VASH-1 levels in both benign and malignant cases. However, no significant difference was observed in VASH-1 concentrations based on pathological stages and histological types in lung cancer patients.

Evaluation of Serum Zonulin and Occludin Levels in Bipolar Disorder

Sertac Zengil, Esra Laloglu

Summary: This study aims to determine whether zonulin and occludin levels are altered in bipolar disorder (BD) and whether they can serve as clinical biomarkers of the disease. The results show that the mean serum levels of zonulin and occludin in patients with BD are significantly higher compared to healthy controls. There is no correlation between the severity of the disease and zonulin and occludin levels, suggesting that these changes occur independently of disease stage. Furthermore, increasing body mass index is associated with higher levels of zonulin and occludin, with the highest levels observed in the obese group. Consideration of intestinal permeability may be important in determining the appropriate treatment for BD.

The CXCL9/10/11-CXCR3 axis as a predictor of COVID-19 progression: a prospective, case-control study

Summary: This study explored the association between levels of chemokines CXCL9, CXCL10, CXCL11, and CXCR3 and mortality in COVID-19 patients. The results showed that these chemokine levels were higher in severe cases compared to non-severe cases, and were also elevated in patients who died compared to those who survived. These findings suggest that these chemokines can serve as potential markers for disease severity and prognosis in COVID-19 patients.

Summary: This study investigated whether patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)-related periodontitis would experience changes in asprosin levels. The results showed that the STEMI+periodontitis group had higher levels of serum asprosin, CRP, and troponin-I compared to the other groups. Additionally, there was a correlation between serum asprosin levels, clinical periodontal parameters, and CRP levels.
