Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most common cancers in areas of Southeast Asia, such as Taiwan, and North Africa. The treatments of NPC, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, were effective, but they also caused some severe side effects. Erianin, a natural product derived from Dendrobium, was proved to have anti-cancer effect in hepatoma, melanoma, non-small-cell lung carcinoma, myelogenous leukemia, breast cancer, and osteosarcoma. Hypothesis/Purpose: According to previous research, we hypothesized that erianin inhibits cancer cell growth through apoptotic mechanisms. This study aimed to determine whether Erianin has an anti-NPC effect and what mechanisms were involved. Methods and Results: The result showed that erianin significantly increased activation of apoptosis in NPC cell lines (NPC-039 and NPC-BM) and arrest the cell cycle obviously through mitochondrial membrane alternation, death receptors activation, and caspase-3, -8, -9 activation. Phosphorylated ERK1/2 was also decreased in erianin-treated NPC cell with dose-dependent manner, and the result was thought to promote apoptosis. Furthermore, the increased rate of apoptotic cells with erianin plus it's inhibitors (U) was also revealed in this study. Conclusion: In conclusion, this is the first research to identify the anti-NPC effect of erianin via the apoptosis mechanism. Erianin was a promising natural agent against nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

The effects of modest drinking on life expectancy and mortality risks: a population-based cohort study

Yen-Tze Liu, June Han Lee, Min Kuang Tsai, James Cheng-Chung Wei, Chi-Pang Wen

Summary: Moderate drinking is considered to have protective effects against certain diseases, but in most cases, alcohol worsens health conditions, especially when consumed at high risk levels. This study aims to balance the risks and benefits of moderate drinking and finds that it can prolong lifespan, while excessive drinking shortens lifespan. The combination of drinking and smoking further increases health risks, and moderate drinkers may also have an increased risk of oral and esophageal cancer.

Survival of Lung Cancer Patients by Histopathology in Taiwan from 2010 to 2016: A Nationwide Study

Hsuan-Chih Tsai, Jing-Yang Huang, Ming-Yu Hsieh, Bing-Yen Wang

Summary: Lung cancer is a significant threat to the modern world, and this study investigated the overall survival of lung cancer patients based on histopathology in Taiwan from 2010 to 2016. The research found that adenocarcinoma showed the highest increase in overall survival, mainly due to the introduction of targeted therapy. Selecting the appropriate targeted therapy and accurately determining the histopathology of lung cancer are crucial for improving overall survival.

Flavonoids and ischemic stroke-induced neuroinflammation: Focus on the glial cells

Weizhuo Lu, Zhiwu Chen, Jiyue Wen

Summary: Ischemic stroke is a common and serious disease, and neuroinflammation plays a crucial role in its progression. Microglia, astrocytes, and infiltrating immune cells are involved in the complicated neuroinflammation cascade, releasing different molecules that affect inflammation. Flavonoids, plant-specific compounds, have shown protective effects against cerebral ischemia injury by modulating the inflammatory responses.
