Perceived barriers and facilitators to the adoption of telemedicine infectious diseases consultations in southeastern Missouri hospitals

Thabani Nyoni, Emily C. Evers, Maria Perez, Donna B. Jeffe, Stephanie A. Fritz, Graham A. Colditz, Jason P. Burnham

Summary: This study explores the barriers and facilitators to implementing tele-ID consults at rural hospitals in southeastern Missouri. The study identifies logistical, technological, emotional, and legal challenges as barriers to adoption, while perceived need, benefits, flexibility, and prior experiences are facilitators. The findings highlight the potential of tele-ID consults to address healthcare gaps and improve access to infectious disease consultations in underserved communities.

Repeated measures of mammographic density and texture to evaluate prediction and risk of breast cancer: a systematic review of the methods used in the literature

Akila Anandarajah, Yongzhen Chen, Carolyn Stoll, Angela Hardi, Shu Jiang, Graham A. Colditz

Summary: This systematic review aimed to assess methods used to relate repeated mammographic images to breast cancer risk. Several studies showed that adding change of density or mammographic features improved model performance. Risk of bias of studies was highest in prognostic factor measurement and study confounding.

Trent, Roel GW. Verhaak, Nikhi Wagle, Chery Willman, John FP. Bridges

Summary: The NCI Participant Engagement and Cancer Genome Sequencing (PE-CGS) Network aims to engage diverse populations in cancer genomics research. Through a four-phase process, they have identified five priorities for participant engagement: tailoring education and communication materials, identifying measures of engagement, finding optimal engagement strategies, understanding cancer disparities, and personalized return of genomic findings to participants.

Sleep Behaviors, Genetic Predispositions, and Risk of Esophageal Cancer

Xiaoyan Wang, Ruiyi Tian, Xiaoyu Zong, Myung Sik Jeon, Jingqin Luo, Graham A. Colditz, Jean S. Wang, Konstantinos K. Tsilidis, Yo -El S. Ju, Ramaswamy Govindan, Varun Puri, Yin Cao

Summary: Sleep behaviors, such as excessive sleep and daytime napping, are associated with an increased risk of esophageal adenocarcinoma. Poor sleep habits are also linked to a higher risk of this cancer, independent of genetic risk.

Identifying regions of interest in mammogram images

Shu Jiang, Jiguo Cao, Graham A. A. Colditz

Summary: Screening mammography is crucial for early detection and prevention of breast cancer, but the irregular boundary of breast area in mammograms poses challenges in identifying risk-associated regions. We propose a proportional hazards model with imaging predictors characterized by bivariate splines over triangulation, enforced with group lasso penalty function, to address these challenges and achieve higher discriminatory performance.

Epidemiology and Risk Factors for Breast Cancer: 21st Century Advances, Gaps to Address through Interdisciplinary Science

Mary Beth Terry, Graham A. Colditz

Summary: Research methods for studying risk factors and prevention of breast cancer have rapidly advanced. This review focuses on epidemiological studies over the past two decades, summarizing scientific discoveries and their translation into clinical practice and public health interventions for reducing breast cancer risk. The review highlights the importance of timing of exposure and susceptibility windows and discusses the implications of recent evidence for risk stratification models and clinical translation to maximize prevention benefits and minimize harm.

Disentangling age, gender, and racial/ethnic disparities in multiple myeloma burden: a modeling study

John H. Huber, Mengmeng Ji, Yi-Hsuan Shih, Mei Wang, Graham Colditz, Su-Hsin Chang

Summary: In this study, a mathematical model was used to analyze nationally representative data from the United States and found that the difference in multiple myeloma incidence can be explained by an increased incidence of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) among male and non-Hispanic Black populations. There was no evidence showing differences in the rate of progression from MGUS to multiple myeloma by either gender or race/ethnicity. The results suggest that screening for MGUS among high-risk groups, such as non-Hispanic Black men, may be a promising strategy to reduce the burden and disparities in multiple myeloma health.

Modifiable risk factors in women at high risk of breast cancer: a systematic review

Sarah Y. Cohen, Carolyn R. Stoll, Akila Anandarajah, Michelle Doering, Graham A. Colditz

Summary: Modifiable risk factors such as alcohol, smoking, obesity, hormone use, and physical activity can affect a woman's risk of breast cancer. However, the impact of these factors on women with inherited risk (family history, BRCA1/2 mutations, or familial cancer syndrome) is still unclear. Further research is needed to better understand how these modifiable risk factors influence breast cancer risk in women with inherited risk due to the heterogeneity and limited power of existing studies.
