Summary: This study evaluated the association of carotid atherosclerosis and microalbuminuria with 10-year ASCVD risk in middle-aged individuals in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that microalbuminuria measured by SUA may indicate risk of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis and high 10-year ASCVD risk.

Summary: The intima-media thickness (IMT) and its irregularities or ulcerations in the common carotid artery (CCA) can serve as biomarkers for cardiovascular system integrity. Total homocysteine and lipoprotein levels are commonly used for cardiovascular risk stratification. Duplex ultrasound (DUS) combined with serum biomarkers can assess atherosclerotic disease and cardiovascular risk effectively.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the normal pediatric values of carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) by conducting a systematic review of the literature. The results showed that the average IMT in children using B-mode and radiofrequency techniques were 0.43mm and 0.41mm respectively. No significant relationship was found between IMT and age or sex.

Summary: In this work, we propose an end-to-end boundary-salience multi-branch network, BSMNet, to identify the carotid intima-media from ultrasound images. Our method exploits prior shape knowledge and anatomical dependence to improve the accuracy of boundary identification and incorporates a strip attention model for segmenting thin strip regions. Experimental results demonstrate the promising performance of our method, achieving about 0.02 improvement in Dice and HD95 compared to other state-of-the-art methods. Our method is expected to advance the analysis of systemic arterial disease with ultrasound imaging.

Summary: The study aims to investigate the relationship between serum 25(OH)D and carotid artery intima-media thickness (CIMT) in men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Results showed that serum 25(OH)D levels were significantly decreased in ED patients compared to the healthy control group, while CIMT values were significantly increased in the moderate and severe ED groups compared to the control group. IIEF-5 score was positively correlated with serum 25(OH)D level and negatively correlated with CIMT value. After adjusting for confounding factors, there were significant associations between CIMT values, 25(OH)D levels, and IIEF-5 scores.

Summary: In middle-aged to elderly Finns, higher adherence to the Life's Simple 7 is associated with lower carotid lumen diameter and higher distensibility, but not with carotid intima-media thickness. Adherence to healthy lifestyle habits is therefore linked to better carotid structure and function in this population.

Summary: This study aimed to verify whether the area under the curve of the internal carotid artery Doppler wave can be a useful marker for assessing insulin resistance (IR) among polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) cases. The results showed that the area under the curve of the internal carotid artery wave had a strong correlation with all PCOS parameters and had the highest predictive value for HOMA-IR. This suggests that the area under the curve of the internal carotid artery wave is a reliable marker for assessing insulin resistance, especially during metformin therapy.

Summary: The study found that RV glucose uptake in PET and decreased RVEF can identify PAH patients with worse prognosis. Combining parameters from PET and MRI may help identify higher-risk patients who could benefit from escalated therapy, but this hypothesis needs prospective validation.

Summary: Dysfunction of the right ventricle is crucial for survival in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, with late gadolinium enhancement at RV insertion points being associated with RV dysfunction. Quantification of LGE at RVIPs can provide additional prognostic information, as shown in the study where higher LGEMI correlated with worse prognosis in PAH patients. The indexed mass of LGE at RV septal insertion points may serve as a non-invasive marker of PAH prognosis.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes and prediabetes in patients with chronic coronary syndromes (CCS) and identify factors associated with dysglycemia. Results showed a 5.1% newly diagnosed diabetes rate and 72.3% prediabetes rate among study participants. Body mass index and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol were identified as important factors in assessing the risk of dysglycemia development after hospital discharge.

Summary: In patients with coronary artery disease, serum levels of Chemerin are correlated with inflammatory markers, insulin resistance, and an unfavorable lipid profile. The correlation with fat mass depends on glucose metabolism status. The mechanisms regulating Chemerin secretion may differ depending on the presence of diabetes/prediabetes.

Summary: Cardiovascular diseases are the most common causes of hospitalization, death and disability in Europe. Despite our knowledge of cardiovascular risk factors, morbidity and mortality remain high, resulting in significant social and economic costs. Diet is a potentially modifiable risk factor, and the relationship between the gut microbiome, diet, and cardiovascular diseases is complex and not fully understood.

Summary: Despite knowledge of classical coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factors, the morbidity and mortality associated with this disease remain high. New factors that may affect the development of CAD, such as the gut microbiome, are extensively investigated. CAD is associated with altered gut microbiome composition and function, including changes in Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio and alpha-beta biodiversity.

Summary: To improve the quality of care, it is important to understand patients' needs and expectations. This study found that socioeconomic status, marital status, and age were associated with patients' expectations of family nurses. Younger patients were more likely to expect health counseling from family nurses, while those who expected home visits had lower self-evaluated health. These findings suggest that family nurses should tailor their services to individual patients' situations and needs.
