Soil salinization is a major problem for low-elevation countries like Bangladesh and is expected to worsen due to global warming and associated sea level rise. A constant monitoring of salinity affected areas is imperative to prevent land degradation, agricultural and livelihood losses. With this aim, we developed three soil salinity models with direct, indirect and a combination of both of these soil salinity measurement techniques, for south-western Bangladesh. The five salinity indexes (direct) and eleven environmental variables (indirect) were integrated using Principal Component Analysis, and the predictability of the models was evaluated against ground-based soil salinity measurements from soil survey and land cover maps generated during the model development. Delineation based solely on salinity indexes yielded results that contradicted with models developed from indirect variables and combining all the variables. Results suggest that the salinity model developed by combining direct and indirect techniques has the highest prediction capacity and can also be explained in terms of land cover changes. Therefore, an integrated approach yielded better delineation of salt-affected areas, characterized by active hydrological processes and vegetation cover. The findings and maps produced from this study would provide a new contextual planning tool to policymakers, for devising adaptation strategies in affected areas of Bangladesh.

P2/N95 filtering facepiece respirators: Results of a large-scale quantitative mask fit testing program in Australian health care workers

Maxim Milosevic, Raaj Kishore Biswas, Lesley Innes, Martin Ng, Ali Mehmet Darendeliler, Alice Wong, Elizabeth Denney-Wilson

Summary: A study conducted on 6,287 Australian healthcare workers revealed suboptimal fit of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs). The research found that 45% of workers required testing on multiple FFR models, and older age and male sex were associated with significantly higher fit failure rates.

Extreme temperature and rainfall events in Bangladesh: A comparison between coastal and inland areas

Abu Yousuf Md Abdullah, Md Hanif Bhuian, Grigory Kiselev, Ashraf Dewan, Quazi K. Hasan, M. Rafiuddin

Summary: This study aimed to understand the trends in extreme climatic events in coastal and inland areas of Bangladesh. Results showed significant warming in both areas, with coastal areas experiencing a higher rate of warming. While most extreme rainfall indices did not show significant changes, there was evidence of localized dryness and increased rainfall at individual stations. The decrease in rainfall in the drought-prone northwestern region was contrary to previous studies.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of the early phase of COVID-19 on the coverage of maternal and newborn health services in a rural subdistrict of Bangladesh. The findings showed that there were no significant changes in the coverage of antenatal care during the third trimester between the early phase of the pandemic and the pre-pandemic period. However, there was an increase in the attendance of medically trained providers during childbirth in the early phase of the pandemic. The rate of early initiation of breastfeeding did not significantly differ between the two periods.

Residential area greenness and hypertension: a national assessment on urban adults in Bangladesh

Jahidur Rahman Khan, Raaj Kishore Biswas, Md Belal Hossain, Rownak Jahan Archie

Summary: This study investigated the associations between urban greenness and blood pressure metrics among adults in Bangladesh and found an inverse relationship between greenness and systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and hypertension. The study also highlighted the mediating role of body mass index in these associations. Adopting urban greening policies could potentially reduce the risk of hypertension and contribute to the reduction of non-communicable disease burden in Bangladesh.

Carer involvement with children and child-friendly book ownership in Bangladesh

Raaj Kishore Biswas, Anowara Rayhan Arusha, Nurjahan Ananna, Enamul Kabir, Jahar Bhowmik

Summary: This study evaluated the involvement of carers with children and the ownership of age-appropriate books. The findings showed that among children aged 0-4 years in Bangladesh, 11.2% had no shared activities with carers, and 60.7% had at least four shared activities. Among the surveyed children, 27.4% owned at least one book. The Western part of Bangladesh had higher levels of carer-child shared activities and more child-friendly books in households.

Summary: This study explores the factors associated with trust in government, sources of information, and government actions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Bangladesh. Findings show that a majority of the sample had low trust in the government, with foreign mass media and academic journals being the most trusted sources of information. Trust in the health ministry of Bangladesh was the lowest. Occupation, income, financial loss during the pandemic, and self-assessed knowledge on COVID-19 were found to be associated with trust levels.

Factors Associated with Low Birthweight in Low-and-Middle Income Countries in South Asia

Ngan Ngo, Jahar Bhowmik, Raaj Kishore Biswas

Summary: Low Birth Weight (LBW) in children is associated with increased risk of infant mortality, learning difficulties, heart diseases, and diabetes. A study analyzing latest demographic and health surveys across South Asian countries found that Pakistan had the highest proportion of LBW, while Nepal had the lowest. Factors such as living in rural areas, having highly educated partners, and belonging to richer families were found to reduce the likelihood of having a child with LBW.

An Offenders-Offenses Shared Component Spatial Model for Identifying Shared and Specific Hotspots of Offenders and Offenses: A Case Study of Juvenile Delinquents and Violent Crimes in the Greater Toronto Area

Jane Law, Abu Yousuf Md Abdullah

Summary: This study applies Bayesian shared component spatial modeling (SCSM) to identify hotspots from two variables (offenders and offenses), developing three risk surfaces for shared by both offenders and offenses, specific to offenders, and specific to offenses. The results suggest that a significant portion of the relative risks of juvenile delinquents and violent crimes can be explained by the shared component of offenders and offenses. The method provides insights into clusters of high risks due to both offenders and offenses or due to one of them only.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that although the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALY rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The highest death and DALY rates are found in low and low-middle SDI countries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures.

Women's Attitudes Toward Intimate Partner Violence in Low- and Middle-Income Countries of Southern Asia

Lauren Alexandra Pettitt, Raaj Kishore Biswas, Jahar Bhowmik

Summary: This study investigated the acceptance of intimate partner violence (IPV) among South Asian women, and identified the prevalence and predictors of IPV acceptance. The survey included a total of 103,139 ever-married women from Bangladesh, Laos, and Nepal. The findings revealed that 27.8% of the sampled South Asian women accepted IPV, without significant variation among countries. Education was found to be the most reliable protector against IPV acceptance.

Examining climate ambition enhancement in ASEAN countries' nationally determined contributions

Jiahui Qiu, Sharon Seah, Melinda Martinus

Summary: With ASEAN's rapid population and economic growth, its medium-term climate ambition becomes crucial to global mitigation efforts. Although all ASEAN Member States have communicated their ambitions through NDCs, the region still falls short of a 1.5 or 2-degree scenario. Assessing and comparing the NDCs is complex due to varying types of targets and actions. Through an assessment framework, AMS' strategies for raising mitigation ambition are examined, with the need for stronger economy-wide targets identified. Different groups with varying stages of progress in climate ambition among AMS are clarified, along with specific recommendations for each group.
