Summary: By creating textures on rake faces and filling them with molybdenum disulfide, micro-textured tools can significantly reduce cutting forces, cutting temperatures, and power consumption, as well as improve tool life in dry milling of Ti-6Al-4V alloys. The cutting parameters have a significant impact on energy consumption, and the main mechanism for the improved performance of micro-textured tools is their self-lubricating function.

Summary: Researchers are intrigued by the potential benefits of micro-textures in improving cutting tool performance, especially in machining superalloys. This study compared the machining performance of two homothetic and six hybrid micro-textured tungsten carbide inserts during dry turning of Inconel-718. Dimple and channel micro-textures on the rake face of the inserts, with various orientation angles and combinations, showed significant improvements in tool life, cutting forces, and surface finish. Adhesion and attrition were the main forms of tool wear, and chip morphology analysis revealed long helical and segmented chips.

Summary: The study found that under different sliding conditions, dimples defined by nanosecond laser exhibited the lowest steady-state coefficient of friction, while in Hank's solution, lines and crosshatching showed better frictional characteristics after running-in and the removal of bulges around the laser textures. In terms of wear resistance, low-density lines pattern and particularly dimples were the most promising in contact situations likely to occur during starved/dry-lubrication conditions.

Summary: This study investigates the application of one-dimensional ultrasonic vibration-assisted turning in generating micro-textured surfaces. A theoretical model and simulation model are established to reveal the influence of different processing parameters on micro-dimple size, shape, and distribution. The results confirm the controllable generation of micro-textures under intermittent cutting conditions.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of process parameters on the hardness of laser surface textured aluminum alloy, finding that the scanning speed is the dominant parameter, followed by pulse frequency, and energy density has minimal influence. Hardness gradually increases with higher energy density and pulse frequency, while decreases with higher scanning speed. The research can be used to select appropriate process parameters for manufacturing high-performance surface textures.

Summary: Tool texturing is beneficial in machining processes, but its application in micromachining has been limited due to high costs and difficulties in generating precise textures. This study proposes a method using mechanical micro indentations to create microtextures on micro-turning inserts, showing promising results in reducing cutting forces, surface roughness, cutting temperature, and tool flank wear. The proposed methodology is found to be comparable with alternate approaches of tool texturing reported in the literature.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of dents on the tribological behavior of rolling element bearings. It finds that bearings with dents have higher coefficients of friction but the wear losses depend on the combination of dent parameters. The depth of dents has a more significant impact on the tribological performance of textured bearings compared to the diameter of dents.

Summary: This study investigates the anisotropic wetting on textured surfaces. Three stripe-like textures with different heights were created using three different polymers. The contact angle in all directions was measured using a lab-built goniometer. Two different behaviors, correlated to the wetting state, were observed. The Wenzel state showed strong anisotropy, with the contact angle following a Gaussian evolution. The Cassie-Baxter state, on the other hand, exhibited no anisotropy, with the contact angle remaining constant and close to the predicted value. This study deepens our understanding of droplet anisotropy by linking it to surface textures and chemistry.

Summary: Micro-dimples fabricated on the surface of WC/Co cemented carbide can significantly reduce the friction coefficient, and the use of solid lubricants can further decrease it. The density of the dimples does not have an obvious influence on the friction coefficient, while the wear rates of ceramic balls decrease with increasing sliding speeds for textured samples. The textured dimples can store lubricants and capture wear debris, which plays an important role in the engineering application of surface texturing in cemented carbide materials.

Summary: This paper investigates the feasibility of improving the tribological properties of Ti3SiC2 MAX phase composite by employing laser surface texturing. Experimental results show that both line and square textured MAX phase composite surface exhibit excellent wear performance as well as a reduction in friction, which can be attributed to the combined effect of surface texture, topography, surface hardening, and tribofilm evolution.

Summary: This study compared the effects of micro-grooved textures on coated and uncoated inserts in terms of cutting forces and interface temperatures. The results showed that the textures positioned below the nose radius on the rake face or flank face had no impact on the dry hard turning of AISI-4140 steel in consideration of cutting temperature and resultant cutting force. Contrary to expectation, it was found that the textured tools were not statistically significant. This suggests that micro-textured tools may not be suitable for all machining conditions.

Summary: This study aimed to prevent harmful consequences of the turning process by using micro-textured cutting inserts with a femtosecond laser. It investigated the effects of different micro-pattern geometries on cutting capacity in turning experiments with titanium-aluminium-nitride (TiAlN) coatings. The results showed that cutting tools with cross texture exhibited better reduction of machining forces, friction coefficients, and tool wear.

Summary: The research focused on improving the dry friction and wear performance of aluminum alloys through a combination of texturing pretreatments and lubricant films. The study showed that the sample with 100μm spacing texture and PTFE/PPS film exhibited the best anti-wear effect during dry reciprocating sliding, increasing wear life by 10% and reducing wear track width and adhesion width by 35% and 25%, respectively.

Summary: In this study, an innovative approach was used to transform engineering design into production, aiming to achieve enhanced joint strength in a new type of friction stir spot welding (FSSW) process. Double spot friction stir welding (DSFSW) and double spot zigzag friction stir welding (DSZFSW) processes were developed to improve the strength of welded joints. The mechanical properties of these joints were compared with single spot friction stir welding, considering the effect of tool geometry and spindle speed.
