Summary: This study investigated the relationship between hematocrit (Hct) levels and retinal artery occlusion (RAO). The results showed that Hct levels ≥40% were associated with the occurrence of RAO. In male patients, there was a trend of a non-linear dose-response association between Hct levels and ischemic vascular events. Hct levels ≥40% in patients older than 65 years with at least six comorbidities could be associated with RAO.

Summary: Technologies for preservation of specimens in the absence of cold chains are essential for optimal utilization of existing laboratory services in developing countries. The prototype, SPECTRA-tube, enables the collection, drying, transportation, and recovery of large-volume specimens. Compared to existing dry storage technologies, SPECTRA-tube increases the volume of liquid specimens that can be transported in the dry state and allows for the recovery of the entire sample in the liquid state, making it compatible with conventional downstream analysis methods.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between gestational hemodilution, represented by decreased hematocrit levels, and the risk of postpartum depression (PPD). The results showed that higher levels of gestational hemodilution were associated with a higher risk of PPD. This finding suggests that monitoring gestational hematocrit levels could be a biomarker for PPD.

Summary: Herpes zoster (HZ) is a serious health problem due to its prevalence and complications, including stroke and acute myocardial infarction. A retrospective cohort study was conducted to analyze the association between HZ and Major Adverse Cardiac and Cerebrovascular Events (MACCE). The study found that HZ patients had a 19% higher risk of MACCE in the first year of follow-up and antiviral treatment did not improve long-term survival. Further studies are needed to evaluate the risk of HZ and the impact of HZ vaccination on this risk.

Summary: In this cohort study, the frequency and recurrence rates of neurological manifestations in patients with adenosine deaminase 2 (ADA2) deficiency before and after initiation of tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-a) inhibiting therapy were analyzed. The results showed that neurological manifestations, especially transient ischaemic attack/ischaemic stroke, are common and often the presenting symptom in patients with ADA2 deficiency, highlighting the importance of awareness among neurologists and pediatricians.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate osteoporosis risk in Taiwan patients who had a stroke. The results showed that the risk of osteoporosis was 1.82-fold higher in patients with a history of stroke compared to those without. The impact of stroke on osteoporosis risk was more significant in males and younger age groups. Addressing stroke-targeted treatment modalities may help minimize adverse outcomes of osteoporosis.

Summary: Uncontrolled pediatric hypertension may increase the risk of hypertension in adulthood. This study found that hematological parameters are associated with blood pressure levels in children and adolescents. Participants with elevated blood pressure had higher red blood cell counts, hemoglobin counts, and hematocrit levels compared to those with normal blood pressure. The study also showed that increasing levels of hematological parameters were linked to significantly increased systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and mean arterial pressure. Furthermore, there was an increased risk of prehypertension and hypertension with higher levels of red blood cell counts, hemoglobin counts, hematocrit levels, and iron.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a scoring model based on early brain injury indicators to predict the functional outcomes of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) at 90 days. The model, named TAPS, showed good discrimination and calibration in both the derivation and validation cohorts, and proved to be an easy handle tool for clinicians to predict the 90-day outcomes and identify patients at risk for poor prognosis.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the value of second-look ultrasound (US) for preoperative localization in patients with primary hyperparathyroidism with negative or discordant imaging results. The sensitivity, positive predictive value, and accuracy of second-look US were found to be 92.1%, 95.1%, and 88.1%, respectively. Overall, second-look US is a promising method for preoperative localization, especially for patients with negative or discordant imaging findings.

Summary: This study assessed the performances of droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) and next-generation sequencing (NGS) in detecting EGFR T790M mutation in the plasma samples of NSCLC patients. The results showed that ddPCR had a high sensitivity and specificity in detecting EGFR T790M mutation. Furthermore, a higher EGFR T790M abundance was associated with a better response to third-generation EGFR-TKIs.

Summary: Determination of drug binding kinetics in plasma is challenging, and this study introduces a new parameter called dynamic free fraction to describe drug-protein binding kinetics. The dynamic free fraction can be determined by coupling the drug binding assay with a reporter enzyme and high-resolution mass spectrometry. This methodology bypasses the challenges in existing methods and allows assessment of the impact of protein binding kinetics on drug properties.

Summary: T cells play a crucial role in the cell-mediated antitumour response. Bispecific antibodies (Bi-Abs) have shown promise in recruiting T cells for killing tumours. This study demonstrates the expression of CD155 in a wide range of human haematologic tumours and highlights the effectiveness of the bispecific antibody anti-CD3 x anti-CD155 in activating T cells to target malignant haematologic cells. The results show that CD155Bi-Ab-armed T cells exhibit enhanced cytotoxicity and increased secretion of cell-killing mediators and T-cell-derived cytokines, indicating that CD155 could be a novel target for immunotherapy against haematologic malignancies.

Summary: This study compared the long-term outcome of hemorrhagic stroke or death in patients with conservative management or stand-alone embolization for AVM. The results showed that embolization did not prevent long-term hemorrhagic stroke or death compared with conservative management in the overall cohort, as well as in the unruptured and ruptured AVM subgroups. Stratified analysis suggested that target embolization might be beneficial for unruptured AVMs, while curative embolization improved the outcomes of ruptured AVMs. The long-term neurological status was similar between the two strategies.

Summary: The uptake of oxygen by cells and tissues is an important indicator of metabolic demand, microenvironment changes, and pathophysiology. Using a non-invasive optical fiber oxygen sensor, researchers have revealed a spatiotemporal profile of oxygen uptake at the ocular surface of rodents and non-human primates. The results showed a distinct oxygen uptake gradient in mice, with a higher influx at the limbus and conjunctiva regions compared to the center of the cornea. The findings provide valuable insights for comparative studies and understanding the response of the cornea and other tissues to various insults or environmental changes.

Summary: In this study, quantitative digital subtraction angiography (QDSA) was used to explore the hemorrhagic quantitative hemodynamic indicators of brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) nidus. The results showed that a higher stasis index and slower transnidal relative velocity (TRV) were significantly correlated with AVM rupture and could be used as effective indicators to predict future hemorrhage risk.
