Recovery of Soil Hydraulic Properties for Assisted Passive and Active Restoration: Assessing Historical Land Use and Forest Structure

Tree planting and natural regeneration are the main approaches to achieve global forest restoration targets, affecting multiple hydrological processes, such as infiltration of rainfall. Our understanding of the effect of land use history and vegetation on the recovery of water infiltration and soil attributes in both restoration strategies is limited. Therefore, we investigated the recovery of top-soil saturated soil hydraulic conductivity (K-s), soil physical and hydraulic properties in five land use types: (i) a secondary old-growth forest; (ii) a forest established through assisted passive restoration 11 years ago; (iii) an actively restored forest, with a more intensive land use history and 11 years of age; (iv) a pasture with low-intensity use; and (v) a pasture with high-intensity use, in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. For these land use types, we determined the historical land use patterns and conducted soil sampling, using the Beerkan method to determine K-s values in the field. We also measured tree basal area, canopy cover, vegetation height, tree density and species richness in forest covers. The K-s decreased when land use was more intense prior to forest restoration actions. Our results indicate that land use legacy is a crucial factor to explain the current difference in soil and vegetation attributes among study sites.

Summary: Encounters between flowers and invertebrates play a crucial role in tropical forest ecosystems. This study aims to provide a comprehensive database of flower-invertebrate interactions in the Atlantic Forest. The dataset includes over 18,000 interaction records forming 482 networks, involving 641 plant genera and 581 invertebrate genera. The study highlights the knowledge gap in canopy flower-invertebrate interactions and the need for further research in remote forested areas.

Atlantic Forest restoration recovers physical and biological properties in the short term, but not the general soil quality

Summary: Ecological restoration can improve soil quality to mitigate global soil degradation. However, soil monitoring is often overlooked, hindering the understanding of restoration effects and recovery time. A study in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest found that moderately assisted restoration and unassisted natural recovery areas had lower soil quality compared to the reference ecosystem, indicating the need for long-term restoration efforts.

Low Cost and Easy to Implement Physical and Hydrological Soil Assessment of Shade-Grown Coffee in Santa Rosa, Guatemala

Summary: Coffee agroecosystems have the potential to positively impact soil hydrological functions, but it is unclear how soil properties regenerate after land-use change and what low-cost indicators there are. Common methods to assess soil hydraulic properties are time consuming and expensive. In this study, we investigated soil properties in different land-use types and found that shade-grown coffee agroecosystems have positive effects on soil hydrological properties. The selected methodologies proved to be low cost and easy to implement, but regular monitoring of infiltration is recommended to better understand temporal variability.

Determination of soil pore size distribution and water retention curve by internal magnetic field modulation at low field 1H NMR

Summary: The determination of soil pore size distribution and water retention curve is important in understanding soil processes. However, existing methods are expensive, time-consuming and prone to bias and errors. In this study, the use of 1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxometry is proposed to directly determine the pore size distribution and estimate the water retention curve of undisturbed soil samples, overcoming the limitations of previous methods.

Summary: By using UAV-borne LiDAR, it is possible to distinguish different forest types in restoration landscapes in southeastern Brazil. Using a random forest classification model, the study successfully classified conservation and production forests with a high accuracy. However, classifying all six forest types proved to be more challenging due to their similarities in management, regeneration dynamics, and structure.

Summary: Although native vegetation plays a crucial role in maintaining aquatic ecosystems, forest restoration efforts have been found to decrease water yields worldwide. This study clarifies the connection between forest restoration and water services and identifies gaps in the literature that hinder the assessment of the benefits of forest restoration on water yields. The authors suggest strategies to improve forest restoration planning and implementation and emphasize the need for future research to consider hydrologic parameters beyond annual streamflow and encompass broader spatial-temporal scales.

Promoting Bird Functional Diversity on Landscapes with a Matrix of Planted Eucalyptus spp. in the Atlantic Forest

Summary: Promoting the diversity of biological communities in agricultural areas is crucial for biodiversity conservation, especially for bird populations which show rapid responses to landscape changes. This study reveals that the composition and configuration of planted Eucalyptus spp. forests have significant effects on the functional diversity of bird assemblages. Factors such as tree age, land cover, and clone types influence functional divergence, functional evenness, and species richness of bird populations. These findings highlight the importance of good management practices in maintaining bird diversity and suggest that associating Eucalyptus trees with other cover types in the landscape can increase bird functional diversity.

Trends in Brazil's Forestry Education-Part 2: Mismatch between Training and Forest Sector Demands

Summary: This study investigated the current scenario and trends regarding human resources in the forest sector. The findings suggest a shortage of qualified professionals in the job market and a lack of behavioral skills training. New college graduates were found to lack important soft skills and knowledge in certain areas. However, there was a convergence between job requirements and the skills considered important by new graduates.

Soil physical quality response to management systems in a long-term sugarcane trial

Summary: This study aims to assess the physical quality of soils cultivated under different tillage and management systems for sugarcane production. The results showed limited differences between cultivation systems based on traditional indicators. However, visual assessments indicated poor soil structural quality in some systems, with NT4 identified as the least compromising system.
