In female patients, severity of abdominal pain is negatively associated with age and positively associated with depression, constipation severity, and diarrhea severity. In male patients, severity of abdominal pain is associated with state anxiety, constipation severity, and diarrhea severity.

Summary: The management of chronic symptomatic functional bowel disorders (FBDs) in the United States incurs considerable healthcare resource use and cost, with pharmacologic therapies being more commonly prescribed than nonpharmacologic interventions. Combination treatment strategies are more likely to be implemented by primary care physicians, highlighting the need to improve comprehensive FBD management.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of abdominal massage on the severity of constipation, bowel function, and quality of life in patients with functional chronic constipation. The results showed that abdominal massage had a significant impact on improving constipation severity, bowel function, and quality of life. Abdominal massage should be considered as a first-line therapy for functional chronic constipation.

Summary: The purpose of this review is to discuss up-to-date psychological treatment strategies for functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPDs) and provide practical implications for primary care providers. Recent findings suggest that positive diagnosis, pain education, and access to multidisciplinary care improve outcomes for FAPD patients. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and hypnosis have the strongest evidence in psychological treatments, but other nonpharmacological approaches also show promise.

Summary: This study evaluates the reliability and reproducibility of interpretations of fecal loading on abdominal radiographs in diagnosing functional constipation. The results indicate poor to fair agreement among physicians for both inter and intraobserver comparisons. This supports the current recommendation to not use abdominal X-rays for diagnosing constipation.

Summary: This study found that abdominal massage has good efficacy in the treatment of functional constipation. Patients in the treatment group showed significant improvement in defecation frequency, difficulty in defecation, stool properties, and PAC-QOL scores. Abdominal massage can increase defecation frequency, reduce difficulty in defecation, improve stool properties, and positively affect the quality of life of constipated patients.

Summary: Pediatric functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPD) are common and challenging to diagnose and treat. This study investigated changes in brain connectivity and activity in youth with FAPD during a water load symptom provocation task (WL-SPT). The findings suggest that these changes may be related to pain unpleasantness and intensity. The study provides insights into the mechanisms of pain and treatment response in FAPD.

Summary: The Brussels Infant and Toddler Stool Scale (BITSS) appears to be more sensitive in detecting hard stools and functional constipation (FC) compared to the Bristol Stool Scale (BSS). Further studies are needed to determine whether BITSS is suitable to replace BSS in non-toilet-trained infants and toddlers.
