Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between maternal and delivery characteristics and self-reported perceived control during childbirth. A secondary analysis of a multicenter randomized trial was conducted, comparing labor induction at 39 weeks of gestation with expectant management in low-risk nulliparous individuals. The findings suggest that unemployment, lack of private health insurance, Asian race, Hispanic ethnicity, smoking, operative delivery, and higher labor pain are associated with lower perceived control during labor.

Summary: This article aims to summarize the evidence from published literature on the effect of key interventions targeting maternal infections on adverse birth outcomes. The results suggest that administering 3 or more doses of intermittent preventive treatment can reduce the risk of low birth weight. Providing insecticide-treated bed nets, periodontal treatment, and screening and treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria may also reduce the risk of low birth weight. However, there is limited evidence for other interventions in reducing adverse birth outcomes.

Summary: Evidence in an Icelandic population suggests a reduction in elective cesarean section and preterm birth rates during COVID-19 lockdown, particularly in the first lockdown period. However, further research is needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms for these findings.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effect of virtual reality glasses on the pain and satisfaction of mothers during episiotomy. The findings indicated that the use of virtual reality glasses significantly reduced pain and increased satisfaction among the intervention group compared to the control group.

Summary: This exploratory study conducted in Canada shows that SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy is significantly associated with an increased risk of adverse maternal outcomes and preterm birth.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of analgesia during labor in women who had a vaginal birth and found that only 4% received labor analgesia, mainly epidural. The prevalence of women receiving analgesia was significantly higher in countries with a higher Human Development Index (HDI). Education, nulliparity, and previous cesarean delivery were significantly associated with increased use of analgesia.

Summary: This study found that most birth companions provided beneficial support actions for women during childbirth, including emotional support, motivation, providing nourishments, messenger activities, and pain relief through massage. However, companion fearful behaviors and disrespectful care hindered women's coping with labor. Women desired thoughtful communication, trust, and anticipatory care from birth companions to focus on themselves during labor.

Summary: Gestational fluoride exposure is associated with increased birth size and increased odds of being born large for gestational age, and these associations are not explained by changes in maternal thyroid hormone levels.

Summary: Preterm labor refers to birth before 37 weeks of gestation, occurring in 5-20% of pregnancies. Influenced by maternal, fetal, and environmental factors, infectious pathogens may account for 25-40% of preterm birth. The association between maternal periodontal disease, pathogenic oral bacteria in the placenta, and preterm delivery is still controversial in spite of extensive research.

Summary: Survivors of preterm birth face various disabilities, and addressing the rates of low birth weight, neonatal and maternal morbidities and mortalities is crucial. Research has provided theories on risk factors and clinical manifestations, but there is a lack of biomarkers for early diagnosis. To overcome current limitations, an integrated approach studying the network interaction between different tissues and organs is needed.

Summary: Advanced maternal age (AMA) does not increase the likelihood of premature birth, but is associated with a higher rate of provider-initiated early-term birth. The study used a propensity score to assess this association and found that AMA alone is not a significant contributor to premature birth.

Summary: This study analyzed the coexistence and prevalence of obstetric interventions in maternity hospitals in Belo Horizonte City, as well as investigated sociodemographic and obstetric factors associated with these interventions. The results highlighted two conflicting obstetric profiles, one including beneficial practices and the other including harmful or ineffective practices. The study emphasized the persistence of an obstetric care model not based on scientific evidence.

Summary: Delayed cord clamping (DCC) is recommended for preventing anemia, but it does not significantly affect maternal satisfaction. This study found that maternal satisfaction with the birth experience is influenced by the age of the childbearing woman and certain intrapartum factors, while the timing of cord clamping does not have an impact.

Summary: In Australia, nearly half of births involve labour interventions. The current study examined the associations between biopsychosocial factors and labour interventions using 19 years of population-based data. The results showed that factors such as chronic hypertension, long perceived length of labour, and private health insurance were associated with vaginal births with episiotomy and/or instrumental interventions, while factors such as being overweight, advanced maternal age, and long perceived length of labour were associated with unplanned caesarean section without episiotomy and/or instrumental interventions.
