Bacterial communities in larger islands have reduced temporal turnover

Damian W. Rivett, Shorok B. Mombrikotb, Hyun S. Gweon, Thomas Bell, Christopher van der Gast

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms behind the species-time relationship by sampling bacterial communities in tree-holes over the course of a year, finding an inverse relationship between turnover rates and island size. The findings should renew interest in STR-based patterns and processes, as they are currently understudied compared to SARs.

Relationships between community composition, productivity and invasion resistance in semi-natural bacterial microcosms

Matt Lloyd Jones, Damian William Rivett, Alberto Pascual-Garcia, Thomas Bell

Summary: This study found that naturally occurring microbial communities with well-growing combinations of bacteria can drive invasion resistance, mirroring results seen in artificial communities grown in the lab. The results suggest that productivity is a key factor underpinning invasion resistance in naturally-occurring microbial communities.

Microbial community succession in steam-sterilized greenhouses infected with Fusarium oxysporum

Nilita Mukjang, Shorok B. Mombrikotb, Thomas Bell

Summary: This study tracked the succession of Fusarium in steam-sterilized soil. The results indicated that although steam sterilization can temporarily eliminate Fusarium, its re-emergence may be exacerbated as the resident bacterial community is continuously depleted by the sterilization process, while Fusarium benefits from nutrients released by steaming.

The interactions and hierarchical effects of long-term agricultural stressors on soil bacterial communities

Shorok B. Mombrikotb, Maaike Van Agtmaal, Emma Johnstone, Michael J. Crawley, Hyun S. Gweon, Robert I. Griffiths, Thomas Bell

Summary: This study reveals the impacts of agricultural practices on soil microbial communities and the interactions between different factors through long-term, large-scale field experiments. The results show that soil pH is the most influential factor to underground communities and it also mediates the impacts of other management factors. In addition, there is a significant interaction between liming and pesticide application, and nutrient amendments alter bacterial community structure in acidic soils. The research also suggests that chemical amendments may not penetrate deeply into physically unperturbed soils with effects concentrated between 0 and 30 cm.

Latent functional diversity may accelerate microbial community responses to temperature fluctuations

Thomas P. Smith, Shorok Mombrikotb, Emma Ransome, Dimitrios-Georgios Kontopoulos, Samraat Pawar, Thomas Bell

Summary: The response of complex microbial communities to climatic fluctuations is still not well understood. This study investigated how bacterial communities in soil can respond to changes in environmental temperature through a combination of phenotypic plasticity and species sorting. The results showed that distinct communities with different phylogenetic and functional characteristics emerged at different temperatures, with K-strategist taxa favored under cooler conditions and r-strategist taxa favored under warmer conditions. The study also found that the dynamic emergence of distinct communities across a wide range of temperatures is driven by the resuscitation of latent functional diversity.

Many roads to bacterial generalism

Terrence H. Bell, Thomas Bell

Summary: The fundamental niches of bacteria are defined along various environmental axes, and interactions with other organisms can influence their realized niches. Bacteria are generally categorized as generalists or specialists, which is linked to their functional role in the ecosystem.
