Objectives The aim of this study was to develop an EQ-5D-5L value set reflecting the health preferences of the Malaysian adult population. Methods Respondents were sampled with quotas for urbanicity, gender, age, and ethnicity to ensure representativeness of the Malaysian population. The study was conducted using a standardized protocol involving the EuroQol Valuation Technology (EQ-VT) computer-assisted interview system. Respondents were administered ten composite time trade-off (C-TTO) tasks and seven discrete choice experiment (DCE) tasks. Both linear main effects and constrained non-linear regression models of C-TTO-only data and hybrid models combining C-TTO and DCE data were explored to determine an efficient and informative model for value set prediction. Results Data from 1125 respondents representative of the Malaysian population were included in the analysis. Logical consistency was present in all models tested. Using cross-validation, eight-parameter models for C-TTO only and C-TTO+DCE hybrid data displayed greater out-of-sample predictive accuracy than their 20-parameter, main-effect counterparts. The hybrid eight-parameter model was chosen to represent the Malaysian value set, as it displayed greater out-of-sample predictive accuracy over C-TTO data than the C-TTO-only model, and produced more precise estimates. The estimated value set ranged from -0.442 to 1. Conclusions The constrained eight-parameter hybrid model demonstrated the best potential in representing the Malaysian value set. The presence of the Malaysian EQ-5D-5L value set will facilitate its application in research and health technology assessment activities.

Andrew Malcolm Garratt, Tonya Moen Hansen, Liv Ariane Augestad, Kim Rand, Knut Stavem

Summary: The purpose of the study was to provide the first Norwegian EQ-5D-5L and EQ VAS population norms for the adult general population. A postal survey was conducted on a random sample of 12,790 Norwegians to collect data on EQ-5D-5L dimensions, EQ-5D index, and EQ VAS scores, stratified by age categories, gender, and education level. The results showed variations in health status across different age groups, genders, and education levels, with higher levels of health associated with increasing education.

Time trade-off with someone to live for: impact of having significant others on time trade-off valuations of hypothetical health states

Tonya Moen Hansen, Knut Stavem, Kim Rand

Summary: This study found that having children and/or a partner was associated with lower willingness to trade life years in completing the TTO task, resulting in higher elicited health state utilities. Therefore, the presence or absence of significant others can influence health state preference values in valuation studies.

A Comparison of Self-evaluated Survey and Work Sampling Approach for Estimating Patient-care Unit Cost Multiplier in Genetic Nursing Activities

Khairu Hazwan Mustaffa, Asrul Akmal Sha, Lock-Hock Ngu

Summary: This study compared patient care multipliers estimated subjectively with work sampling techniques in genetic nursing activities. The results showed significant differences between the two techniques, with work sampling estimating less direct care time but more indirect care and unit-related activity time compared to subjective evaluation. The study concluded that estimating the cost of care based solely on face-to-face contact time with patients underestimates the actual cost, and more time should be allocated to patient-related care activities.

Completing the time trade-off with respondents who are older, in poorer health or with an immigrant background in an EQ-5D-5L valuation study

Tonya Moen Hansen, Knut Stavem, Kim Rand

Summary: This study examined the effects of age, immigrant background, and self-reported health on the ability to complete the time trade-off (TTO) in a general population sample. The results showed that older age, poor health, and immigrant status increased the likelihood of non-completion and slow completion of the TTO tasks.

Censoring in the time trade-off valuation of worse-than-dead EQ-5D-5L health states: can a time-based willingness-to-accept question be the solution?

Meixia Liao, Kim Rand, Zhihao Yang, Chien-Ning Hsu, Hsiang-Wen Lin, Nan Luo

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether a time-based willingness-to-accept (tWTA) question can be used to elicit values lower than -1 and improve the estimation of EQ-5D-5L values. The results showed that using a tWTA question to address the censoring issue of values in cTTO tasks is not an effective solution.

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices toward Dengue Fever, Vector Control, and Vaccine Acceptance Among the General Population in Countries from Latin America and Asia Pacific: A Cross-Sectional Study (GEMKAP)

Asrul Akmal Shafie, Edson Duarte Moreira, Alberta Di Pasquale, Dirk Demuth, Joanne Yoong Su Yin

Summary: This study surveyed a representative adult population in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore to assess their willingness to uptake dengue vaccines and their knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards dengue, vector control, prevention, and vaccination. The results showed low global scores for knowledge (48%) and practice (44%), and a moderate score for attitude (66%), with comparable scores across countries. Among all respondents, 53% had a high willingness to vaccinate against dengue, with higher willingness in Latin America (59%) than in Asia Pacific (40%). Key factors associated with increased willingness included accessibility to public vaccination and trust in the healthcare system and government. A common approach to dengue prevention across endemic countries, with country-specific customization, may reduce dengue burden and improve outcomes.
