Progranulin (PGRN) has been characterized as an autocrine growth and survival factor and is known to stimulate tumorigenesis and proliferation of several types of cancer cell. However, little is known about the prognostic role of PGRN in colorectal cancer (CRC). A retrospective analysis was performed for patients with colorectal cancer who underwent curative resection between May 2013 and June 2015. PGRN expression in tumor cells was semi-quantitatively categorized (no expression, 0; weak/focal, 1+; moderate/focal or diffuse, 2+; strong/diffuse, 3+), and high expression was considered for tumors graded >= 2+ staining intensity. A total of 109 patients (28 stage I, 32 stage II, and 49 stage III) were analyzed. Thirty-eight patients (35%) had tumors with high PGRN expression, and there was a trend of elevated pre-operative CEA and CA19-9 levels in patients with high PGRN-expressing tumors compared to those with low PGRN-expressing tumors (CEA, 49% vs. 21%; CA19-9, 21% vs. 7%). The 3-year recurrence-free survival (3Y-RFS) and overall survival rates were 83.7% (95% CI, 76.8-90.6) and 96.0% (95% CI, 92.3-99.7), respectively. Patients with high PGRN-expressing tumors had a worse rate of 3Y-RFS (66.8%) compared to those with low PGRN-expressing tumors (92.4%; p = 0.010). Multivariate analysis showed that high PGRN expression, age (>66 years), stage (III), and perineural invasion (+) were independent prognostic factors associated with poor RFS after adjusting for confounding factors including sex, MSI, tumor location, KRAS, and lympho-vascular invasion. PGRN overexpression was significantly associated with poor RFS in patients with CRC who have undergone curative resection.

Risk of developing metachronous colorectal neoplasia after the resection of proximal versus distal adenomas

Yoon Suk Jung, Nam Hee Kim, Youngwoo Kim, Dong Il Park

Summary: This study compared the risk of metachronous colorectal neoplasia (CRN) according to adenoma location and found that proximal adenoma was associated with an increased risk of metachronous CRN, but not with an increased risk of metachronous advanced CRN (ACRN).

Positive fecal immunochemical test results are associated with non-colorectal cancer mortality

Yoon Suk Jung, Jinhee Lee, Chang Mo Moon

Summary: The study found that positive fecal immunochemistry test (FIT) results are associated with an increased risk of mortality from CRC and various other chronic diseases, suggesting that FIT could be a predictor of mortality independent of its association with CRC.

Clinical outcomes and prognostic factors of cone-beam CT-guided radiofrequency ablation for pulmonary metastases in colorectal cancer patients

Hyun Pyo Hong, Hyung Ook Kim, Dong-Hoe Koo, Yun-Gyoo Lee, Myung Sub Kim, Soo Youn Ham, Du-Young Kang, Tae Yun Oh, Hyebin Lee, Kyung Uk Jung, Hungdai Kim

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed the safety and efficacy of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for lung metastases from colorectal cancer. The results showed that CBCT-guided lung RFA is a relatively safe and effective treatment option. However, controlling extrapulmonary metastases requires a combination or sequential use of systemic treatment and local treatment.

Impact of cumulative hyperglycemic burden on the pancreatic cancer risk: A nationwide cohort study

Dong-Hoe Koo, Kyungdo Han, Cheol-Young Park

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between cumulative hyperglycemia exposure and pancreatic cancer risk. The study analyzed data from 3,138,099 individuals who underwent annual health screenings between 2009 and 2013. The results showed that individuals with higher hyperglycemic burden had an increased risk of pancreatic cancer, and even pre-diabetic glucose levels were associated with an elevated risk.

Summary: This study compared the eradication rates of tegoprazan-based and rabeprazole-based triple therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection. The results showed no significant difference in the eradication rates between the two groups, as well as similar rates of adverse events.

Summary: Through a retrospective analysis and risk scoring model, we found that male patients with cancer who were younger and used Fentanyl buccal tablets three or more times per day were more likely to tolerate a high dose of the medication. This finding has important implications for optimizing pain management in cancer patients.

Mutual association between family history of gastric and colorectal cancer and risk of gastric and colorectal cancer

Yoon Suk Jung, Mai Thi Xuan Tran, Boyoung Park, Chang Mo Moon

Summary: This study evaluated the associations between gastric cancer family history and colorectal cancer risk, as well as between colorectal cancer family history and gastric adenoma risk. The results showed that gastric cancer family history was associated with an increased risk of gastric cancer, while colorectal cancer family history was not associated with the risk of gastric cancer or gastric adenoma. However, individuals with family histories of both gastric cancer and colorectal cancer had a higher risk of gastric adenoma. The study suggests that family histories of gastric cancer and colorectal cancer may affect each other's neoplastic lesion risk.

Association between Age at Helicobacter pylori Eradication and the Risk of Gastric Cancer Stratified by Family History of Gastric Cancer: A Nationwide Population-Based Study

Yoon Suk Jung, Mai Thi Xuan Tran, Huiyeon Song, Boyoung Park, Chang Mo Moon

Summary: This study found that early treatment of H. pylori infection is associated with a reduced risk of gastric cancer. The gap in gastric cancer risk between patients with and without a family history of gastric cancer widens as the age at H. pylori eradication increases. The findings suggest that early treatment of H. pylori infection can maximize gastric cancer prevention.

Evaluation of Pretreatment Albumin-Bilirubin Grade as a Better Prognostic Factor Compared to Child-Pugh Classification in Patients with Hepatocellular Carcinoma Receiving Transarterial Chemoembolization Combined with Radiotherapy

Jason Joon Bock Lee, Jun Su Park, Hyun Pyo Hong, Myung Sub Kim, Dong-Hoe Koo, Hyebin Lee, Heerim Nam

Summary: This study analyzed the pretreatment albumin--bilirubin (ALBI) grade as a prognostic factor in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients undergoing combined transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and radiotherapy (RT). The results showed that ALBI grades 2-3 were associated with worse progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS). The study suggests that ALBI grade may be a useful prognostic indicator for HCC patients treated with combined TACE-RT.
