The objective of this study was to investigate the incidence of familial carpal tunnel syndrome in patients admitted to the authors' institution for carpal tunnel release. Questionnaires completed by 120 patients: 92 women (77%) and 28 men (23%) at a mean age of 56 years at their baseline clinical examination were reviewed. Familial occurrence of the disease was noted in 21 patients (17%): 16 women and five men. Three family members were affected in three patients, two relatives in eight patients, and one relative in 10 patients, giving a total of 35 affected relatives. The patients' sisters (n = 16) were the most commonly involved, followed by mothers (n = 12), daughters (n = 2), brothers (n = 2), grandmothers (n = 2) and an aunt (n = 1). Bilateral manifestation of the disease was noted in 19 patients (90%) and in 31 (88%) of their affected relatives. The results suggest that carpal tunnel syndrome shows a moderate tendency to familial occurrence and, if so, it usually manifests bilaterally.

Outcomes of Surgery for intramuscular Haemangiomas in the Extremities

Andrzej Zyluk

Summary: The purpose of this case-series study was to assess the outcomes of surgery for intramuscular haemangiomas in the extremities. The results showed that operative treatment was effective in reducing pain and improving grip strength and hand function. The study concluded that surgical treatment of these rare tumors is safe and effective, although it may be challenging in some cases.

Outcomes of Coverage of Soft Tissue Defects in the Thumb with a Kite Flap

Andrzej Zyluk, Filip Flicinski

Summary: This article presents the results of using the kite flap for the reconstruction of soft tissue defects around the thumb. The study showed that all 14 patients who underwent the kite flap procedure had successful healing of the flaps. After a mean follow-up of 3 years, all patients expressed satisfaction with the surgical outcomes. Although some patients experienced slightly limited thumb mobility, it did not significantly affect hand function.

Outcomes of Surgery for Benign Tumours in The Upper Extremity

Andrzej Zyluk, Ada Owczarska

Summary: Benign tumours of the upper extremity, such as giant-cell tumours of the tendon sheath and lipomas, are common in hand surgeons' practice. This study investigated the distribution of these tumours, their symptoms, and surgical outcomes, particularly recurrence rates. A total of 346 patients who underwent surgery for upper extremity tumours were enrolled, with the most common tumours being giant cell tumour of the tendon sheath and lipoma. Recurrence was noted in 23% of cases, with the highest rates seen in surgeries for rheumatoid nodules and giant-cell tumours of the tendon sheath. Factors associated with increased recurrence risk included histological type of the lesion and incomplete or non-en bloc resection.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the concentration of vitamin D and its metabolites in patients before thyroidectomy. The results showed that patients undergoing thyroidectomy have a marked vitamin D deficiency, which may affect their subsequent convalescence and prognosis. Therefore, determining vitamin D levels prior to thyroidectomy may be useful for considering supplementation in the clinical management of these patients.

Metastases of malignant neoplasms to the hand

Andrzej Zyluk, Filip Flicinski

Summary: Metastases of malignant neoplasms to the hand are very rare and usually indicate widespread neoplastic disease. This study presents 4 cases of metastatic tumors to the hands, mainly originating from renal and lung cancer. Surgical excision and amputation were the main treatment modalities, with 3 patients eventually dying.

Outcomes of surgery for schwannomas of the upper extremity

Andrzej Zyluk, Ada Owczarska

Summary: Schwannoma is a nerve tumor originating from Schwann-cells of the nerve sheath. This study aimed to analyze the outcomes of surgery for upper limb Schwannomas in the authors' institution. The results showed generally good outcomes for the rare tumors, but functional deficits should be considered in cases involving motoric nerves.
