Summary: This study compares the outcomes of implant and synthetic TIGR mesh-based breast reconstructions in breast cancer patients and women with a higher risk for breast cancer. The study found that preoperative chemotherapy was associated with more frequent minor complications, while postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy were related to more frequent serious complications. Patients who underwent prepectoral surgeries had shorter hospitalization time and lower complication rates.

Summary: Prepectoral implant-based breast reconstruction has experienced a renaissance due to advancements in mastectomy techniques and surgical approaches. This technique has regained popularity for its ease of implant placement and preservation of pectoralis muscle function, with additional advantages of decreased postoperative pain, animation deformity, and operative time.

Summary: Prepectoral breast reconstruction is gaining popularity but lacks evidence to support its safety and effectiveness. This study of 347 women and 424 reconstructions suggests that complication rates are high at 3 months after surgery, with 8.2% experiencing implant loss, 19.5% requiring treatment for infection, and 16.0% needing further surgery. These rates are comparable to subpectoral mesh-assisted reconstruction, highlighting the need for a well-designed randomized trial to compare prepectoral and subpectoral implant-based techniques.

Summary: This study compared the complication rates of nipple-sparing mastectomy and immediate implant-based breast reconstruction with or without reduction. The results showed that skin reduction during reconstruction increased the risk of full thickness skin necrosis, especially when the implant volume exceeded 500 cc. Therefore, this technique should only be considered for patients with moderate breast volumes, higher grades of ptosis, and lower planned implant volumes.

Summary: In this retrospective study, the relationship between intraoperative core body temperatures and reconstructive surgical outcomes was evaluated in patients undergoing immediate breast reconstruction after mastectomy. Prolonged intraoperative hypothermia was found to increase the risk of ischemic complications, highlighting the importance of maintaining normal body temperature in surgical procedures to improve patient outcomes.

Summary: The study did not find evidence that systematic mesh implantation during primary colostomy creation was effective in preventing parastomal hernia. The positioning of the mesh in a retro-muscular position with a central incision for colon passage was not recommended as a method to prevent parastomal hernia. Optimization of mesh location and reinforcement material is recommended for future research.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the carbon footprint of products used in five common surgical operations and identify the biggest contributors. The study found that single-use surgical items had the greatest carbon contribution, and changing practices to reduce the use of single-use items and switch to reusables, as well as optimizing cleaning and waste disposal processes, could significantly reduce the carbon footprint of these operations.

Summary: Most breast cancers can be treated with breast-conserving surgery, but a localization step is required to determine which tissue needs to be removed. The traditional technique involves placing a guidewire into the tumor, but it has drawbacks. New techniques have been developed but have not been extensively studied. A review is presented to discuss available techniques and introduce the MELODY study that focuses on patient, surgeon, and radiologist preference.

Summary: This systematic review aimed to summarize the available evidence regarding the outcomes of contralateral mastectomy (CM) as an alternative to breast reconstruction for women who underwent a mastectomy for unilateral breast cancer. The study found that women who chose to undergo CM reported high levels of satisfaction and had complication rates similar to those who underwent unilateral mastectomy without reconstruction.

Summary: This study surveyed UK breast surgeons to assess their current practice regarding the use of drains and management of post-operative seromas. The results showed that the majority of surgeons use drains, but there is wide variation in the assessment and management of post-operative seromas. Over half of the surgeons felt uncertain about the use of drains after mastectomy and axillary surgery, and two-thirds believed that a trial evaluating the use of drains versus no drains after simple breast cancer surgery was needed.

Summary: This study evaluated the inherent immunity of five commercial cucumber varieties to powdery mildew and studied their physiological and biochemical responses to pathogen infection. Different varieties showed differential responses in terms of chlorophyll, anthocyanin, flavonoid, phenolics, ascorbic acid, superoxide dismutase, and peroxidase activity. Summary: This study evaluated the extent to which robot-assisted anti-reflux surgery (RA-ARS) has followed the IDEAL framework during its evolution. The results showed variability in the reporting standards of RA-ARS studies, with under-reporting of important aspects of study design and a high degree of outcome heterogeneity. Further well-designed prospective studies and randomized trials are needed, along with agreement on outcome selection, measurement, and reporting for future RA-ARS studies.
