Summary: The emergence of the Omicron variant has led to increased infectiousness but decreased virulence compared to ancestral COVID-19 variants. Previous studies have recommended delaying non-emergency surgeries for up to 4-8 weeks after COVID-19 infection. However, postponing surgery has been linked to tumor progression and worse survival outcomes for colorectal cancer patients. In this study, we examined the risk and optimal timing for surgery in colorectal cancer patients with perioperative COVID-19 infection.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between intraoperative anesthesia-related factors and postoperative complications in patients undergoing emergency abdominal surgery, and identify risk factors for these postoperative complications. Retrospective analysis of 942 emergency surgery patients undergoing general anesthesia and emergency abdominal operations was performed, and logistic regression analysis showed that patient age, ASA classification, intraoperative hypotension lasting more than 20 min, intraoperative tachyarrhythmias, and surgical level were independent risk factors for postoperative complications.

Summary: Perioperative breathing training can reduce the incidence of postoperative pulmonary complications and improve arterial oxygenation in patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Patients receiving breathing training also had shorter hospital stays, lower hospital charges, and higher patient satisfaction compared to those without training.

Summary: The study compared the surgical outcomes of emergency and delayed laparoscopic cholecystectomy in patients with acute cholecystitis, finding that emergency surgery is associated with more adverse outcomes. It recommends delayed surgery and ensuring the surgery date to reduce the risk of readmission.

Summary: Early postoperative infections can significantly affect spinal surgery patients, and the relationship between glucose metabolism disorders and surgical infections is still not well understood. This study examined 16 relevant studies and found a significant correlation between preoperative HbA1c concentration and the risk of postoperative infections, as well as non-infective complications and patient outcomes in spinal surgery.

Summary: The study examined the association between dexamethasone use, perioperative hyperglycemia, and postoperative complications in glioblastoma patients. The results showed that perioperative hyperglycemia, higher average dexamethasone use, and elevated preoperative HgbA1c were associated with increased risk of complications. Therefore, reducing postoperative hyperglycemia and limiting dexamethasone use may help decrease the risk of complications, and selective HgbA1c screening can identify high-risk patients.
