Summary: This study found that the incidence of ankylosing spondylitis decreased between 1998 and 2007, then increased from 2007 to 2017. The rising prevalence may indicate improved patient survival. However, there is a persisting delay in rheumatology referral and diagnosis, particularly in women.

Summary: Axial spondyloarthritis is a chronic inflammatory disease primarily affecting the axial skeleton, leading to symptoms such as chronic back pain and spinal stiffness. Diagnosis relies on recognizing clinical patterns and utilizing clinical, laboratory, and imaging features. Treatment options include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as first-line therapy, with biologics as a second-line option, showing efficacy in improving disease symptoms.

Summary: This study found that patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) have a higher mortality rate compared to the general population, and healthy individuals carrying the HLA-B27 gene also have a similar risk. Additionally, female patients have a lower life expectancy. However, in the overall European population, the presence of the HLA-B27 gene does not affect survival or the risk of death from cardiovascular disease.

Summary: This study aims to identify the risk factors for ankylosing spondylitis (AS) during perinatal and early life, while controlling for family-shared confounding using a sibling comparison design. The study found that having older siblings and a history of tonsillectomy in childhood were independently associated with the development of AS, even after adjusting for family-shared factors in a sibling comparison analysis.

Summary: This study investigated sick leave occurrence in early axSpA patients, finding that male gender and higher education were associated with lower risk of SL, while higher disease activity, older age, smoking, and use of TNF inhibitors were associated with higher risk of SL.

Summary: In a global axSpA cohort, HLA-B*27 (-) patients had a longer delay in diagnosis, more frequently had peripheral arthritis, enthesitis, IBD, and psoriasis, and were more often treated with csDMARDs compared to the HLA-B*27 (+) subgroup.

Summary: This study found that uveitis is a risk factor for stroke development in patients with AS, and both anterior uveitis and posterior segment involvement increase the risk of stroke.

Summary: This study is the first to demonstrate that inflammatory arthritis can impact male fertility. Men diagnosed with IA before and during the peak reproductive years have lower fertility rates, higher rates of childlessness, and more fertility problems.

Summary: This study compared the differences between psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA). The results showed that there were significant differences between patients with axial involvement in PsA (axPsA) and patients with axSpA accompanied by psoriasis (axSpA+pso), regardless of whether it was clinically or radiologically defined.

Summary: This study compared the clinical and radiographical characteristics of axial psoriatic arthritis (PsA) with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) with psoriasis. It found that axial PsA is predominantly HLA-B27 negative and has different manifestations compared to AS with psoriasis. There is great heterogeneity in the definition of axial PsA from a clinical and imaging perspective.

Summary: The objective of this study is to assess heterogeneity in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and its sources. The results suggest that women clinically diagnosed with axSpA but without radiographic sacroiliitis have distinct characteristics compared to men with non-radiographic axSpA.

Summary: This study compared patterns of healthcare utilization between male and female patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA). The findings showed that female patients had higher healthcare utilization than male patients before and after diagnosis, possibly indicating biological differences in disease course or sociocultural differences in healthcare-seeking behavior.

Summary: This systematic review found a high prevalence of periodontal bacterial DNA in coronary atherosclerotic plaque specimens, with Porphyromonas gingivalis and Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans being the most commonly detected species. In addition to periodontal microbes, DNA from a variety of other microbes was also recovered from the collected samples.

Summary: The review found that periodontal disease and tooth loss are associated with peripheral vascular disorders, but there is a lack of evaluation in the broader domains of oral health in individuals with these disorders. Future studies should assess these broader domains to gain a more complete understanding of oral health and its potential association with peripheral vascular disorders.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed a significant association between elevated serum IgG antibody responses (anti-Pg and anti-Aa) and CHD, suggesting their potential use as biomarkers for detecting and monitoring at-risk populations. However, inconsistencies in the design and interpretation of immunoassays highlight the need for standardization in assessing antibody responses against periodontal bacteria.

Summary: Chlorohexidine (CHX) is widely used as a biocide, but there have been reports of resistance in various bacterial species, even at lower concentrations than clinically used. Inconsistent compliance with standard lab procedures for biocide susceptibility testing has hindered synthesis of these findings. Studies have also found cross-resistance between CHX and other antimicrobials in vitro, possibly due to shared resistance mechanisms and/or the selective pressure from intensive CHX use. It is important to investigate CHX resistance and cross-resistance in both clinical and environmental isolates to understand its role in multidrug resistance selection. Although clinical studies supporting the hypothesis of CHX cross-resistance with antibiotics are lacking, raising awareness among healthcare providers about the potential impact of unrestricted CHX use on antimicrobial resistance is recommended.

Summary: Hormonal changes in women during different stages of their life affect gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation. Estrogen and progesterone act as modulators and effectors during the menstrual cycle. This study assessed the changes in gingival inflammation and salivary pH in relation to hormonal levels in young females. The results showed increased gingival inflammation and plaque accumulation during the premenstrual phase.
