Commercial dietary supplements containing Salix alba bark are used for weight loss and athletic performance enhancement. A systematic literature review on adverse effects potentially resulting from oral intake of such supplements was performed. In spite of the long history of medical use only very limited data on toxicity of white willow bark are available. However willow bark in comminuted or powdered form is a source of heavy metals and particularly the toxicity of cadmium may be of health concern.

Summary: This study revealed significant knowledge gaps related to salt and iodine among university students in Europe and Asia, with European students being better informed about salt recommendations but lacking knowledge about iodine. Significant differences were observed between countries in terms of salt intake frequency, awareness of methods to reduce salt intake, and types of salt used. Promoting awareness and information campaigns are necessary to encourage behavior changes towards reducing salt intake and conscious use of iodised salt at an individual level.
