Summary: Revisional bariatric surgery (RBS) is a challenging procedure and this study analyzed data from 252 patients who underwent RBS after laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding (LAGB) or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). The study found that RBS after LSG had a higher overall morbidity rate, while RBS after LAGB had more perioperative issues.

Summary: The pathophysiology of body weight control involves complex interactions between hormonal, environmental, behavioral and genetic factors. This study analyzed the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of 13 genes encoding gastrointestinal peptides and long-term weight response in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. Eight genetic variants were identified that were independently associated with weight response, and the highest scoring category in each risk score was significantly associated with lower weight loss and greater weight regain at the end of the follow-up.

Summary: By combining clinical variables and genetic testing, the study established a good predictive model for weight loss response after bariatric surgery, showing a higher predictability compared to using only clinical variables. This finding highlights the key role of personalized medicine in improving clinical practice cost-effectiveness.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of marijuana use on complication rates and weight loss outcomes after bariatric surgery. The results showed that patients with a history of marijuana use generally had higher preoperative BMI, but marijuana use was not associated with complications or percent weight loss.

Summary: This narrative review summarizes the existing research on the clinical impact of a Mediterranean diet before and after bariatric surgery, focusing on its effects on weight loss and improvement in comorbidities. Although the current knowledge is limited, the findings suggest that adopting a Mediterranean diet before and after bariatric surgery is of significant value.

Summary: This systematic review examined the relationship between macronutrient intake and weight loss after bariatric surgery (BS). Eight articles involving 2,378 subjects were included, and the results indicated that protein intake was positively associated with weight loss after BS. Prioritizing protein followed by carbohydrates and reducing lipid intake favored weight loss and weight stability after BS. The review suggests that a high-protein diet (>60 g to 90 g/day) may be beneficial for weight loss and maintenance after BS, but a balance of other macronutrients is also important.

Summary: A study was conducted on patients who underwent bariatric surgery to investigate the factors affecting weight loss and the effectiveness of prophylactic ursodeoxycholic acid against gallstone formation. It was found that weight loss was influenced by initial body weight, sex, and dietary intake. Rapid weight loss was associated with a higher incidence of cholelithiasis.

Summary: This study examined the impact of cannabis use on weight loss outcomes in patients undergoing bariatric surgery. The results showed that pre-surgical cannabis use was not associated with weight loss, but post-surgical cannabis use was linked to poorer weight loss outcomes and increased risk of weight recurrence. Frequent cannabis use (i.e., weekly) was particularly problematic. Healthcare providers should screen patients for cannabis use and educate them about the potential effects of postoperative cannabis use on weight loss.

Summary: Weight loss after bariatric surgery may be reduced in older patients due to changes in metabolism. Some studies showed inferior weight loss in older patients compared to younger ones while others showed no such difference. Stratified recommendations by age are important for counseling patients about expected weight loss after bariatric surgery.

Summary: Revisional bariatric surgery is an option for patients with weight regain or inadequate weight loss after primary elective procedures. However, the safety outcomes of revisional procedures are conflicting. This study aims to characterize the patient demographics, procedure types, and safety outcomes for those undergoing revisional compared to initial bariatric interventions.

Summary: The aim of this study was to estimate the incidence and risk factors for fatal and non-fatal events among COVID-19 infected subjects with obesity or diabetes during the initial three epidemiological waves in the region. A retrospective cohort study was conducted using a primary care database to identify individuals with COVID-19, stratifying them based on diabetes mellitus or obesity. Results showed that fatal events were more common among individuals with diabetes, particularly during the first wave. The number of study events decreased in the second and third waves. Diabetes was found to be a risk factor for fatal events, while obesity was only a risk factor when adjusted for age, sex, diabetes, and COVID-19 waves. HIV, cancer, and autoimmune diseases were also identified as risk factors for mortality among subjects with COVID-19 in the fully-adjusted model.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between lipoprotein abnormalities and atherosclerosis in patients with type 1 diabetes. The results showed that patients with atherosclerosis were older, had longer diabetes duration, higher prevalence of hypertension, lower LDL and HDL particles, but higher VLDL particles compared to those without atherosclerosis. HDL particles, LDL particles, and total atherogenic particle number were independently associated with preclinical atherosclerosis.

Summary: This study explored the levels of midnight cortisol and soluble tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (sTWEAK) in simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant recipients. Summary: Obesity increases the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), and bariatric surgery (BS) has shown to improve obesity-related comorbidities and renal function in CKD patients. This study aimed to investigate the safety and outcomes of BS in CKD patients and found that BS was safe and effective in terms of weight loss, resolution of obesity comorbidities, and improvement of renal function.

Summary: This study reveals the correlation between the accumulation of pro-inflammatory adipose tissue macrophages (ATMs) and liver fibrosis in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Modulation of ATMs improves liver inflammation and fibrosis in an experimental non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) model. These findings highlight the potential of ATMs as a therapeutic target for NAFLD.
