Summary: This study found a significant association between maternal exposure to pyrethroid insecticides during pregnancy and an increased risk of hypospadias in boys. Particularly, the metabolites of cypermethrin were strongly associated with the risk of hypospadias.

Summary: This study investigated the potential impact of prenatal exposure to DDT and pyrethroid insecticides on child growth trajectories. The results showed an inverse association between pyrethroids and weight trajectory parameters among boys, supporting the endocrine-disrupting potential of pyrethroids in humans.

Summary: This study evaluated environmental exposures of children living in a rural region of South Africa using a passive sampler wristband. The study found that the children were mainly exposed to insecticides from indoor residual spraying and household air pollution. Higher concentrations of pollutants were associated with household poverty, lack of electric cookstoves/burners, and longer cooking or burning times.

Summary: Prenatal exposure to DDT and pyrethroid insecticides may be associated with behavioral and emotional problems in two-year-old children. Further investigation is warranted to understand the potential neurotoxicity of these chemicals.

Summary: This study examined the factors influencing smallholder farmers' awareness and accessibility to plant health clinics in South Africa and identified the constraints preventing their effective utilization. The results showed that communication channels have a significant and positive relation to clinic awareness and accessibility, while distance to clinics has a negative influence. The study suggested the adoption of an efficient and effective plant clinic framework by policy makers to improve its usefulness.

Summary: This study found that gestational exposure of female mice to multiple pyrethroids at recommended safe doses had irreversible adverse effects on the ovaries in female offspring. The exposure regulated the expression of miRNAs during early developmental stages, disrupting key biological processes and signaling pathways governing follicular development and ovarian functions. However, lactational and peripubertal exposure to pyrethroid mixture did not significantly affect follicular development and ovarian functions.

Summary: This study investigated the residue of pyrethroid insecticides in bee bread and honey from multiple provinces in China and found that over half of the samples contained at least one type of insecticide. The acute toxicity of these insecticides on larvae was assessed based on the detection results, and the hazard quotient was calculated. These findings provide valuable guidance for the beekeeping industry and pesticide regulation.

Summary: The study found that maternal exposure to organophosphate and pyrethroid insecticides during pregnancy was not significantly associated with adverse effects on early childhood language development. Conversely, in some cases, organophosphate metabolites may have a positive impact on language development.

Summary: Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used and may pose a threat to human health. A study in Lodz, Poland found that non-dietary factors such as owning a dog, using pesticides on household pets, and dietary sources like seeds and nuts can significantly contribute to pyrethroid exposure in young men.

Summary: A study evaluated the association between household carpet dust measurements of 20 insecticides and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia risk. The most frequently detected insecticide active ingredients were permethrin, chlorpyrifos, diazinon, and carbaryl. However, no significant associations with leukemia risk were found among these insecticides.

Summary: South Africa is a major exporter of maize in Africa, but the rural population in the country is exposed to high levels of mycotoxins. Subsistence farming, which is prevalent in rural areas, promotes fungal growth and mycotoxin production, resulting in contaminated maize. The lack of food surveillance poses a greater challenge in combatting mycotoxin exposure in rural communities.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between birth outcomes and urinary biomarkers of pyrethroids, organophosphates, and 2,4-D among healthy pregnant women living in New York City. The results showed that certain concentrations of organophosphate substances were negatively associated with head circumference in boys. In linear regression models, it was found that concentrations of TCPy were inversely associated with head circumference in boys, while higher concentrations of 2,4-D were inversely associated with head circumference among girls.

Summary: Conservation biological control techniques support integrated pest management (IPM) and insecticide resistance management (IRM) by restraining pest resurgence and outbreaks of secondary pests. The lady beetle Eriopis connexa (Germar) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is among the natural enemies in agricultural systems of brassica crops and their populations may be disrupted by exposure to insecticides. This study evaluated the consumption of Lipaphis pseudobrassicae (Davis) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) or larvae of Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) by surviving lady beetles from pyrethroid-resistant and pyrethroid-susceptible populations when exposed simultaneous to the insecticides targeting these pest species.

Summary: This study investigated the link between socio-ecological and conservation strategies regarding tree species richness in traditional agroforestry landscapes in the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve, South Africa. The findings showed that tree species richness is commonly driven by provisioning ecosystem services on farms and communal land, while distance is a major factor influencing species richness in protected areas. The study also revealed a lack of conservation strategy and practices targeting the enhancement of tree species richness by the local people in the traditional agroforestry landscape.

Summary: This study examined the mental health and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Latino farmworkers in California. The findings showed increased symptoms of depression and anxiety, substance use, and food insecurity during the pandemic. Women and farmworkers who worked in the fields were more likely to experience depression and anxiety symptoms related to COVID-19, while increased substance use was more common among them. The study suggests interventions such as providing supplemental income, increasing mental health services, and food support services.
