An Ultra performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled to UV detection method was developed to determine acetamiprid residues in water reservoirs of northern Benin, close to cotton fields. The quantification limit of this method was 0.2 mu gL(-1) acetamiprid in water, its precision ranged between 8% and 22%, and its trueness between 99% and 117% (for concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 5.0 mu gL(-1)). Acetamiprid residues were determined in water samples collected in four reservoirs from northern Benin during the phytosanitary treatment period of cotton. The minimum and maximum concentrations of acetamiprid residues in water were 0.2 and 7.7 mu gL(-1), respectively. These levels do not represent any risk for human consumption of this water, but indicate a regular use of acetamiprid, possibly together with other pesticides which could be more harmful for both humans and aquatic species.

Chronic effects of a binary insecticide Acer 35 EC on Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus through a multi-biomarker approach

Nicresse Lea Guedegba, Ibrahim Imorou Toko, Imen Ben Ammar, Loic Francois, Noelle Oreins, Olivier Palluel, Syaghalirwa N. M. Mandiki, Thierry Jauniaux, Jean-Marc Porcher, Marie-Louise Scippo, Patrick Kestemont

Summary: The study revealed that exposure to Acer 35 EC affects biomarkers and physiological functions in Nile tilapia juveniles, including reduced cholinesterase activity in muscles, intercellular superoxide anion production in both sexes, and disruption of female steroidogenesis and gametogenesis.

Contamination of Water, Sediment and Fish with Residues of Pesticides Used in Cotton Production in Northern Benin

Caroline Douny, Y. M. Berny's G. Zoumenou, Martin Aina, Ibrahim Imorou Toko, Ahmed Igout, Lea Guedegba, Sika K. Chabi, Patrick Kestemont, Marie-Louise Scippo

Summary: In Northern Benin, insecticide residues were detected in water, sediments, and fish samples, with organochlorine pesticides being the primary contaminants. Although estimated daily intakes were below acceptable levels for consumers in the North of Benin, the presence of multiple pesticide residues in a single fish sample indicates a potential risk due to exposure to pesticide mixtures.

Human Adult Microbiota in a Static Colon Model: AhR Transcriptional Activity at the Crossroads of Host-Microbe Interaction

Elizabeth Goya-Jorge, Irma Gonza, Pauline Bondue, Caroline Douny, Bernard Taminiau, Georges Daube, Marie-Louise Scippo, Veronique Delcenserie

Summary: Functional symbiotic intestinal microbiota plays a crucial role in immune defense and xenobiotic metabolism. This study investigates the interaction between host and microbiota through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR). The results suggest that microbiota metabolic products can induce AhR transcriptional activity, with some short-chain fatty acids and biogenic amines identified as potential contributors. AhR activation serves as an important endpoint in studying gut microbiota.

Integrated biomarker response to assess the effects of pesticide residues on Nile Tilapia in aquatic ecosystems contaminated by cotton-field effluents

Nicresse Lea Guedegba, Imen Ben Ammar, Alexis Houndji, Ibrahim Imorou Toko, Lara Van De Merckt, Prudencio Tachegnon Agbohessi, Syaghalirwa N. M. Mandiki, Marie-Louise Scippo, Patrick Kestemont

Summary: An in-situ study combined with an integrated biomarker response was conducted to evaluate the impact of agricultural effluents on the physiological responses of Nile tilapia in North Benin. The results showed that the Batran water reservoir was more harmful to fish than the Songhai reservoir, with higher levels of pesticide contamination depressing immune and reproductive functions. Additionally, the study found that fish contact with sediments in enclosures exacerbated the pesticide burden on fish.

Monitoring of oxolinic acid residues in tilapia flesh (Oreochromis niloticus) using a microbiological screening technique and an LC-UV confirmatory method

Nadir B. Dergal, Pham K. Dang, Caroline Douny, Sidi-Mohammed E. A. Abi-Ayad, Marie-Louise Scippo

Summary: A microbiological screening and LC-UV chromatographic method were developed to identify and quantify oxolinic acid in tilapia flesh. The tests showed high sensitivity, accuracy, and specificity for oxolinic acid, with a detection capacity of 0.75 times the maximum residue limits. The LC-UV method demonstrated satisfactory performance in terms of linearity, precision, accuracy, selectivity, and specificity, with a limit of quantification of 5 µg/kg.

Monitoring of Biogenic Amines in Tilapia Flesh (Oreochromis niloticus) by a Simple and Rapid High-Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography Method

Nadir Boudjlal Dergal, Caroline Douny, Pascal Gustin, Sidi-Mohammed El-Amine Abi-Ayad, Marie-Louise Scippo

Summary: The study achieved the monitoring of six biogenic amines in tilapia flesh using a straightforward, inexpensive, and trustworthy HPTLC approach. The results showed that the shelf life of tilapia is limited to 18 hours under ambient storage conditions due to its putrescine and cadaverine contents.

Oxidative Stability and Microbial Ecology of Fresh Beef with Extremely Long Shelf-Life

Pedro Henrique Imazaki, Bernard Taminiau, Papa Abdoulaye Fall, Mahmoud Elansary, Caroline Douny, Marie-Louise Scippo, Georges Daube, Antoine Clinquart

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the stability of pigment and lipid and analyze the microbial ecology in beef with an extremely long shelf-life using classical methods and metagenetics. Beef samples from different origins with varying shelf-life were stored at subzero temperature or a-1/+4 degrees C and then subjected to simulated retail distribution. Results showed that subzero storage inhibited the growth of certain bacteria during vacuum aging, while metmyoglobin formation and excessive lactic acid bacteria growth limited the shelf-life during retail distribution. Classic microbiological methods underestimated lactic acid bacteria count, whereas metagenetics identified Carnobacterium maltaromaticum as a main contributor to the long shelf-life of Australian beef.
