Emerging Role of Epigenetic Alterations as Biomarkers and Novel Targets for Treatments in Pancreatic Ductal Adenocarcinoma

Marcus T. T. Roalso, Oyvind H. Hald, Marina Alexeeva, Kjetil Soreide

Summary: Epigenetic alterations play a crucial role in pancreatic cancer by affecting gene expression, tumor microenvironment, and immune-based treatments. They can also serve as tools for early detection and prognostication.

Characteristics and fate of patients with rectal cancer not entering a curative-intent treatment pathway: A complete nationwide registry cohort of 3,304 patients

Hartwig Korner, Marianne G. Guren, Inger Kristin Larsen, Dagny Faksvag Haugen, Kjetil Soreide, Leif Roland Korner, Jon Arne Soreide

Summary: This study analyzed data from the Norwegian Colorectal Cancer Registry to describe treatment pathways and survival of rectal cancer patients not eligible for curative treatment. The study found that almost 40% of patients did not receive curative-intent treatment, and there were significant variations in treatment journeys and outcomes.

Pancreatic cancer

Kjetil Soreide, Elena Rangelova, Christina Dopazo, Sven Mieog, Stefan Staettner

Summary: The need for a standardized education and training track in surgical oncology across Europe is emphasized. ESSO offers hands-on courses and face-to-face discussions for skills training. The UEMS/EBSQ fellowship exam tests core competencies in candidates' specialized areas of expertise, but lacks a standardized set of points for each cancer type. This article outlines pancreatic cancer as part of an optimal practice in surgical oncology.

Early Diagnosis of Pancreatic Cancer: Clinical Premonitions, Timely Precursor Detection and Increased Curative-Intent Surgery

Kjetil Soreide, Warsan Ismail, Marcus Roalso, Jacob Ghotbi, Claudia Zaharia

Summary: The poor prognosis in pancreatic cancer is due to late clinical detection and the lack of designated diagnostic or screening tests. Ongoing research aims to identify risk groups and surveillance strategies for early detection.

Histopathological Growth Pattern in Colorectal Liver Metastasis and The Tumor Immune Microenvironment

Claudia Zaharia, Torhild Veen, Dordi Lea, Arezo Kanani, Marina Alexeeva, Kjetil Soreide

Summary: Liver metastases occur in almost half of colorectal cancer patients, and understanding tumor biology is crucial for improving treatment outcomes. This study investigates the histopathological growth patterns of tumor cells at the interface with normal liver tissue and their interaction with immune cells in the microenvironment. Understanding these patterns can help determine treatment strategies and assess prognosis for colorectal liver metastases.

Randomized controlled trials and alternative study designs in surgical oncology

Wim Ceelen, Kjetil Soreide

Summary: Surgery is crucial for the treatment of solid cancers and plays an important role in multimodal cancer management. Surgeons and multidisciplinary teams make decisions based on reliable data, preferably from trials, to provide the best care for cancer patients. Enhancing research literacy among surgical candidates is a priority for the development of the ESSO core curriculum, and a set of principles and emerging concepts is presented to guide surgical oncologists in reading, understanding, planning, and contributing to future surgeon-led cancer trials.

Staged or Simultaneous Surgery for Colon or Rectal Cancer with Synchronous Liver Metastases: Implications for Study Design and Clinical Endpoints

Sheraz Yaqub, Georgios Antonios Margonis, Kjetil Soreide

Summary: For patients with primary colon or rectal cancer and synchronous liver metastases, there are various treatment strategies to consider. The decision regarding surgery depends on several factors. Designing a trial to investigate the optimal approach for simultaneous resection of colon or rectal cancer with liver metastases is challenging due to the complexity of the procedures and the need for a reasonable endpoint.

A multilevel, step-based model to evaluate progress in procedure efficiency for laparoscopic appendicectomy in surgical training: structured evaluation using 'ebb-and-flow' and 'string-of-pearls' concepts

Kjetil Soreide, Benedicte Skjold-Odegaard

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of each step in laparoscopic appendicectomy on overall proficiency using multivariable regression and artificial neural network models, showing that handling the mesoappendix and division of appendix significantly influence procedure proficiency.
