GLOBOCAN 2020 Report on Global Cancer Burden: Challenges and Opportunities for Surgical Oncologists

Summary: Cancer is becoming a major global public health challenge, with the burden of cancer increasing globally according to the GLOBOCAN 2020 report which estimates the occurrence of 36 cancers in 185 countries. There are global disparities in cancer incidence and mortality in different geographic regions, and the human development index (HDI) also affects cancer incidence and projected global burden. Surgical oncologists play a crucial role in future global cancer control strategies.

Exposure to OCPs mainly occurs through skin, inhalation, and consumption of contaminated foods.

The global spread of jellyfish hazards mirrors the pace of human imprint in the marine environment

Summary: The increasing human population in coastal areas has led to a rising demand for ecosystem services and the need to protect the health and sustainability of the seas. However, global anthropogenic changes have negatively impacted marine ecosystems, allowing opportunistic organisms like jellyfish to thrive and threaten marine ecosystem services. A comprehensive dataset covering the period 1960-2019 was used to track the dynamics and implications of jellyfish hazards, revealing that their patterns have been mainly enhanced in human-perturbed Large Marine Ecosystems. The long-term variability of these events suggests a correlation with ocean warming and degradation caused by global anthropogenic changes.

Equity should be integrated into all aspects of health threats, and low- and middle-income countries should be empowered to produce their own medical resources through regional mRNA vaccine manufacturing hubs.
