Summary: The aim of this study was to find a probiotic that can improve the health of honeybee colonies by modulating their immune function. A strain of Lactobacillus casei A14.2 was found to have high immunomodulating activity. The use of this potential probiotic may increase the resistance of honeybees to infectious diseases caused by Nosema spp.

Summary: Xylanase releases xylo-oligosaccharides that stimulate the growth of lactobacilli in the gut. The study found that certain cell-surface WxL and S-layer proteins in Lactobacillus brevis play a role in assisting the cellular adhesion of the bacteria to plant cell wall polysaccharides. These proteins were also found to have cellulose- and xylan-binding ability.

Summary: This study investigated the effectiveness of six USEPA-registered algaecides on treating toxic dinoflagellates in marine environments. The results showed that both copper-based and peroxide-based algaecides were effective in reducing the density of the toxic dinoflagellate, with peroxide-based algaecides having a greater impact on decreasing toxin levels. The study also revealed that salinity, microorganisms, and organic matter influenced the stability of peroxide-based algaecides.

Summary: Bacterial contamination is a severe global problem that requires the development of new antibacterial agents. A ferrocenyl porous organic polymer (FMC-POP) with broad-spectrum antibacterial activity was prepared through copolymerization and exhibited synergistic photothermal and peroxidase-like activity. The combination therapy of near-infrared laser-enhanced photothermal and enzyme therapy showed significantly improved bactericidal effect, with a germicidal efficiency of 99%.

Summary: Endogenous H2O2 generated by a single HeLa cell on PDA-coated PDMS substrates under 25 mM glucose culture conditions was detected using a home-built photoelectric dual detection platform. Upon stimulation with PMA, the cell released a small amount of H2O2 and exhibited a smaller decrease in mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) compared to that on PDMS substrates.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide is a significant redox signaling molecule that plays a crucial role in cell function and communication. In the brain, it acts as a signaling molecule and neuromodulator. Our study reveals that hydrogen peroxide can diffuse in the extracellular space and has a relatively short half-life. These quantitative details provide valuable insights into the physiology of redox signaling and lay the foundation for studying dysregulation in redox homeostasis associated with diseases.

Summary: The mechanism of phosphosugar stress response in Bacillus subtilis was elucidated through comparative transcriptome analysis. Rational metabolic engineering, including the overexpression of the phosphatase YwpJ and deletion of nagB and murQ, resulted in a highly efficient microbial cell factory (strain B. subtilis FMIP34) for the production of GlcNAc, increasing the titer from 11.5 to 26.1 g/L in shake flasks and producing 87.5 g/L in a 30-L fed-batch bioreactor.
