Determination and source apportionment of major and trace elements in atmospheric bulk deposition in a Caribbean rural area

Atmospheric deposition is considered to be the major pathway by which substances from the atmosphere enter to the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. This study constitutes the first exhaustive report on trace metal deposition in Cuba and is aimed to determine the monthly atmospheric flux of 47 major and trace elements in a Caribbean coastal site and investigate the main sources contributing to deposition. Bulk deposition (average of 46 018 mu g m(-2) day(-1)) and fluxes of studied elements showed a high variability and no seasonality with the dry and wet periods, results that we attributed to the fluctuations of the emissions from their main sources rather than to meteorological factors controlling the deposition processes. However, stronger correlations were found between typical crustal elements, which showed a marked seasonality with the presence of African cloud dust in the Caribbean. Lanthanoids element (Eu anomalies and La-N/Lu-N ratios) helped us to confirm the seasonal influence of African dust in the geochemical composition of bulk deposition in Cienfuegos. Most of the analysed elements were found in the range of variation of those reported in rural environments around the world but, the elements V, Ni, As and Sb reached higher levels, typically found in urban and industrial areas. The elements Sb, Pb, W, Sn, S, Cu, Mo, Nb and P were moderately enriched (10 < EF < 100) and Zn was highly enriched (EF > 100), indicating they were mainly derived from anthropogenic sources. The La/V ratios were found to be exclusively lower than 0.06 suggesting a strong influence of anthropogenic V emissions from industries with oil and/or petroleum-coke combustion processes. However, we found that V have a predominantly natural origin in the studied region which appear to be related with deposition processes dominated by large particles. Finally, Principal Component, Multilinear Regression and Cluster analyses led the identification of 5 main sources contributing to the bulk deposition: crustal matter (39.5%), marine aerosol (38.2%), combustions including the wastes incineration, wood and fossil fuel burning (6.7%), industries (8.7%) and road traffic (1.4%).

Mineralogical Characterization of Carreaux de Pavement from Northern Spain (Tiebas, Navarre)

10-Years assessment of 7Be and 210Pb in atmospheric bulk depositions in Cienfuegos (Cuba)

Summary: This study presents a 10-year record of Be-7 and Pb-210 atmospheric fluxes at a coastal station in Cienfuegos, Cuba. The fluxes showed seasonal variations, with higher values during wet months. Wet deposition was the main factor influencing the removal of Be-7 and Pb-210 from the atmosphere. The study also found that local and regional conditions, such as precipitation, temperature, and pressure, played a significant role in the variability of these radionuclides.

ANNUAL VARIABILITY OF ATMOSPHERIC FLUXES OF MAJOR AND TRACE ELEMENTS IN CIENFUEGOS IN THE LAST 11 YEARS (2011-2021)

Summary: This study investigated the atmospheric depositions in three stations of Cienfuegos municipality in Cuba and evaluated their temporal variability and environmental implications. The results showed that the highest fluxes of trace and major elements occurred in the urban area and its periphery due to traffic and industrial emissions. The elements Br, S, Zn, Pb, Mo, V, Cu, As, P, Ca, and Ni exhibited high enrichments, indicating significant anthropogenic influence. The overall atmospheric fluxes of these elements decreased in the past decade, similar to the trend observed for annual precipitation, except for V and Ni, which experienced a significant increase possibly due to emissions from oil combustion.

Air quality impacts from the development of unconventional oil and gas well pads: Air toxics and other volatile organic compounds

Summary: Unconventional oil and natural gas development (UOGD) in the United States has expanded rapidly in recent decades, raising concerns about its impact on air quality. This study conducted extensive air monitoring during the development of several large well pads in Broomfield, Colorado, providing a unique opportunity to examine changes in local air toxics and VOC concentrations during well drilling and completions and production. The study identified significant increases in VOC concentrations during drilling operations, highlighting the importance of emissions from synthetic drilling mud. The findings suggest opportunities to mitigate emissions during UOGD operations.

Simultaneous decreases in NO2 levels and disparities in California during the COVID-19 pandemic

Contribution of chemical composition to oxidative potential of atmospheric particles at a rural and an urban site in the Po Valley: Influence of high ammonia agriculture emissions

Summary: This study investigates the chemical composition and oxidative potential of PM10 particles in the Po Valley, Italy, and demonstrates the impact of high levels of atmosphere ammonia. The rural area had significantly higher ammonia concentrations compared to the urban site, resulting in higher levels of secondary inorganic aerosol. Although the SIA components did not contribute significantly to the PM10 oxidative reactivity, they were correlated with the oxidative potential measurements. This suggests that the contribution of SIA to PM oxidative toxicity cannot be ignored.

Summary: Accurate measurement of atmospheric reactive mercury is challenging due to its reactivity and low concentrations. The University of Nevada, Reno Reactive Mercury Active System (RMAS) has been shown to be more accurate than the industry standard, but has limitations including long time resolution and sampling biases. Increasing the sampling flow rate negatively affected RM concentrations, but did not impact the chemical composition of RM captured on membranes.

Exposure estimates of PM2.5 using the land-use regression with machine learning and microenvironmental exposure models for elders: Validation and comparison

The accuracy of the models varied across regions, with the ME models exhibiting higher predictions and lower biases. The use of region-specific microenvironmental measurements in the ME model showed potential for accurate prediction of personal PM2.5 exposure.

Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and hospital admissions for angina among older adults in South China

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ambient air pollution on hospital admissions for angina. The results showed that exposure to ambient particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and ozone are associated with an increased risk of hospital admissions for angina. The association with nitrogen dioxide exposure was found to be the strongest.

A novel algorithm for full-coverage daily aerosol optical depth retrievals using machine learning-based reconstruction technique

Additionally, the dataset exhibits consistent temporal patterns and more spatial details.

Quantifying metallic components in aerosol filter samples using micro-synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence: With quartz filter as an example

Summary: This study developed a sensitive method to measure the metallic components of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and compared the results with different analysis methods. The concentrations of metallic components in personal PM2.5 samples were found to be significantly different from corresponding fixed-site samples. Personal sampling can reduce exposure misclassifications, and measuring metallic components is useful for exploring health risks and identifying sources of PM2.5.
