Summary: In this study, candidate intramuscular fat (IMF) genes in Beijing Black pigs were identified using genome-wide association study and RNA-sequencing analysis. SLC4A7 on SSC13 and INSIG2, CCDC93, and DBI on SSC15 were identified as potential candidate genes for IMF in this population. Additionally, RNA-seq analysis revealed 534 differentially expressed genes and suggested the involvement of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors and FoxO signaling pathway in IMF regulation. The DBI gene was identified as a crucial candidate gene for influencing IMF in Beijing Black pigs.

Summary: A fast and accurate image acquisition and analysis system was constructed to extract and calculate digital IMF content in pork muscle, revealing highly correlated parameters PFAI with marbling scores and chemically defined IMF contents. Genome-wide association analysis identified significant SNPs related to IMF and marbling scores, with higher significance values in PFAI. Novel candidate genes for IMF content were also discovered. This imaging system can provide a fast and high-throughput method for predicting IMF content in pork quality improvement.

Summary: Our study compared the genetic characteristics of seven Shandong indigenous pig breeds with five Western commercial breeds using a high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (HD-SNP) chip-based analysis. The results revealed significant variation among the Shandong breeds in terms of genetic diversity, effective population size, inbreeding level, and genetic distance with the Western breeds. While Laiwu and Dapulian showed low genetic diversity and distant genetic relationship with Western breeds, the other five breeds displayed high genetic diversity within breed and some extent of mixture with Western breeds. Additionally, intensive gene flow was observed among the Shandong indigenous breeds, particularly Wulian, Licha, and Heigai.
