Summary: The study systematically reviewed the literature to assess the effects of perioperative dextrose infusion on the prevention of PONV in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia. The results showed that dextrose infusion reduced the incidence of PONV and the need for antiemetics, without increasing blood glucose levels. Further population-based RCTs are needed to confirm these findings.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the preventive effect of ginger on postoperative nausea and vomiting. The results show that ginger can reduce the occurrence of postoperative nausea, but there was no significant difference in postoperative vomiting, postoperative nausea and vomiting, and antiemetic drug use. More high-quality and rigorous trials are needed to clarify the relationship between ginger intake and the reduction in the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting.

Summary: Sevoflurane and desflurane have similar effects on early postoperative vomiting and nausea, but desflurane has a stronger impact on late postoperative vomiting and nausea compared to sevoflurane. Additionally, the extubation time and emergence time were longer in the sevoflurane group.

Summary: The study found that subhypnotic propofol infusion during general balanced anesthesia is not associated with a reduction in the incidence of PONV during PACU stay and within the first 24 hours after surgery. However, it is associated with a shorter length of hospital stay and longer time-to-extubation, although the differences in both outcomes were not clinically significant.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the perioperative administration of dexamethasone for preventing postoperative shivering. After searching for relevant studies, 12 randomized controlled trials with 1276 participants were included. The results showed that perioperative administration of dexamethasone effectively prevented postoperative shivering and reduced the incidence of postoperative nausea, vomiting, and postoperative nausea and vomiting syndrome.

Summary: This study conducted a network meta-analysis to compare the efficacy of different ginger preparations in controlling postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). It found that ginger oil had the highest probability of being ranked best in reducing the incidence of postoperative vomiting. However, there were no obvious advantages of ginger preparations in reducing postoperative nausea compared to placebo.

Summary: This study compared the effects of two different remifentanil infusion methods on the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and postoperative outcomes. The results showed that although the T-group had a higher total dose of remifentanil, the postoperative outcomes were similar between the two groups. Therefore, the use of target-controlled infusion (TCI) should be considered when stable vital signs are desired during tracheal intubation.

Summary: This meta-analysis study found that opioid-free anesthesia is associated with a lower risk of postoperative nausea and vomiting compared to opioid anesthesia. It also provides adequate postoperative analgesia without interfering with postoperative awakening. However, it did not significantly affect the time to extubation and first postoperative rescue analgesia.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of perioperative magnesium as an adjuvant for postoperative analgesia through umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. While the updated meta-analysis showed a beneficial effect of perioperative magnesium on postoperative analgesia, overall evidence quality ranged from very low to moderate, indicating limited confidence in the beneficial effect of perioperative magnesium on postoperative pain.

Summary: The application of ERAS programs in colorectal cancer surgery is associated with tumor recurrence and survival rates. The study results showed that the overall survival rate was higher in the ERAS group within the first 2 years after surgery. For patients in the advanced cancer stage, participation in the ERAS program was associated with a significantly lower risk of 5-year tumor recurrence and higher 3-year survival.

Summary: This study aimed to validate and compare different pulmonary risk scoring systems in predicting postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) in lung resection surgery. A single-center cohort of lung resection surgeries was used for the study. The accuracy of several pulmonary risk scoring systems, including ARISCAT, LAS VEGAS, SPORC, and CARDOT, was assessed, and it was found that none of the scoring systems had adequate discriminatory power to predict PPCs, highlighting the need for an alternative risk score in thoracic surgery to better predict complications.
