Summary: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used for digestive diseases, but there is conflicting data on the association between PPI use and gastric cancer risk. A pooled case-control study found that short-term PPI use was associated with increased risk of gastric cancer, but long-term use did not show this association. This study provides reassurance to patients and clinicians that long-term PPI use does not significantly increase gastric cancer risk.

Summary: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can disrupt gut microbiota and compromise the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in cancer patients. Our study shows that patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer and urothelial carcinoma who receive ICIs and concomitant PPIs have poorer survival outcomes compared to those without PPIs or receiving chemotherapy. However, PPIs have little impact on survival outcomes in patients with melanoma, renal cell carcinoma, hepatocellular carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma of the neck and head.

Summary: Long-term use of proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) may be associated with increased prevalence of migraine, with the metabolizer phenotype of CYP2C19 potentially influencing migraine rates post-PPI treatment. In men, treatment with PPIs and the CYP2C19 poor metabolizer status were linked to a higher incidence of chronic migraine.

Summary: This study evaluated the survival effect of pretreatment 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography ((18)FDG-PET-CT) on patients with stage IB-IVA cervical cancer receiving image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT). The results showed that pretreatment (18)FDG-PET-CT might be associated with longer survival in these patients.

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the pain and electromyographic (EMG) amplitude ratio of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) to the vastus lateralis (VL) after botulinum toxin type A (BTA) injection in patients with patellar malalignment and osteoarthritic knee. The results showed that the EMG ratios were lower in the patient group compared to the control group, and the VMO/VL ratio significantly improved on the BTA side. Knee pain decreased significantly after the BTA injection, and the EMG ratios were negatively correlated with pain scores. In conclusion, BTA injection effectively reduces knee pain and restores the EMG ratio between the VMO and VL.

Summary: This study analyzed data from Taiwan's publicly funded health care system and found that children had a lower risk of developing intracranial tumors, leukemia, or lymphoma after undergoing CT scans. However, individuals who received 4 or more CT scans had an increased risk of cancer. The highest risk was observed in children who received 4 or more CT scans before the age of 6, highlighting the importance of prudent use of CT in the pediatric population.

Summary: This study found that the use of statins during concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has a significant impact on overall survival and ESCC-specific survival. In addition, the use of hydrophilic statins such as rosuvastatin and pravastatin is associated with the greatest survival benefits. There is also a dose-response relationship between statin use and lower mortality.
