Article Endocrinology & Metabolism

with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Szu-Yuan Wu, Wan -Ming Chen, Yi-Chan Chen, Ming-Feng Chiang, Ming-Che Lee, Ruey-Shyang Soong

Summary: This study investigated the association between H1-antihistamine use and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) risk in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients without hepatitis B or C virus infection. The results showed that the use of antihistamines significantly reduced the risk of HCC in these patients, and a dose-response relationship was observed.

Comparison of surgical complications after curative surgery in patients with oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma and sarcopenia

Shuang Zeng, Chia-Hao Chang, Mingyang Sun, Wan-Ming Chen, Szu-Yuan Wu, Jiaqiang Zhang

Summary: The study aims to clarify the association of sarcopenia with perioperative and postoperative complications in oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) patients. The results showed that OCSCC patients with sarcopenia had a higher risk of perioperative and postoperative complications.

Survival effect of pre-RT PET-CT on cervical cancer: Image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy era

Chih-Hsiung Su, Wan-Ming Chen, Mingchih Chen, Ben-Chang Shia, Szu-Yuan Wu

Summary: This study evaluated the survival effect of pretreatment 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography-computed tomography ((18)FDG-PET-CT) on patients with stage IB-IVA cervical cancer receiving image-guided intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IG-IMRT). The results showed that pretreatment (18)FDG-PET-CT might be associated with longer survival in these patients.

Improvement of Pain and Function by Using Botulinum Toxin Type A Injection in Patients with an Osteoarthritic Knee with Patellar Malalignment: An Electromyographic Study

Alice Chu Wen Tang, Chih-Kuang Chen, Szu Yuan Wu, Simon F. T. Tang

Summary: The aim of this study was to analyze the pain and electromyographic (EMG) amplitude ratio of the vastus medialis oblique (VMO) to the vastus lateralis (VL) after botulinum toxin type A (BTA) injection in patients with patellar malalignment and osteoarthritic knee. The results showed that the EMG ratios were lower in the patient group compared to the control group, and the VMO/VL ratio significantly improved on the BTA side. Knee pain decreased significantly after the BTA injection, and the EMG ratios were negatively correlated with pain scores. In conclusion, BTA injection effectively reduces knee pain and restores the EMG ratio between the VMO and VL.

Risks of leukemia, intracranial tumours and lymphomas in childhood and early adulthood after pediatric radiation exposure from computed tomography

Wei-Hao Wang, Chia-Yu Sung, Shih-Chung Wang, Yu-Hsuan Joni Shao

Summary: This study analyzed data from Taiwan's publicly funded health care system and found that children had a lower risk of developing intracranial tumors, leukemia, or lymphoma after undergoing CT scans. However, individuals who received 4 or more CT scans had an increased risk of cancer. The highest risk was observed in children who received 4 or more CT scans before the age of 6, highlighting the importance of prudent use of CT in the pediatric population.

Statin Use During Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy With Improved Survival Outcomes in Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma: A Propensity Score- Matched Nationwide Cohort Study

Wan-Ming Chen, Ying-Hui Yu, Mingchih Chen, Ben-Chang Shia, Szu-Yuan Wu

Summary: This study found that the use of statins during concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) in patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has a significant impact on overall survival and ESCC-specific survival. In addition, the use of hydrophilic statins such as rosuvastatin and pravastatin is associated with the greatest survival benefits. There is also a dose-response relationship between statin use and lower mortality.
