Summary: The study analysed 277 community gardening articles to explore the impact of community gardening on social and dietary aspects. Positive impacts were found in terms of social benefits and dietary benefits, but issues like methodological rigour and lack of participant diversity were common across studies. The evidence regarding the improvement of diet through community garden participation was neutral, making it unclear whether community gardening is an effective strategy to create a more equitable and just food system.

Summary: We argue that incorporating land use policy into broader community development strategies can contribute to long-term success. Analyzing eight case communities in Alberta, Canada, we found various types of non-coordination between land use tools, development strategies, and long-term narratives. Factors such as higher-level actors, single sector economies, and local administration strength shape the formation of strategies and coordination between them. Strategy can compete, be ignored, or undermined, and local government does not always control its own future.

Geography

Summary: This paper situates itself in the field of policy geography and employs the principles of Planning to define policy analysis as a form of communication. By integrating geographical concepts, the authors introduce the notion of place ontology, recognizing that policymakers are influenced by their local environment in making professional decisions. Through in-depth interviews with 15 non-profit/community stakeholders in an impoverished and environmentally distressed community in Philadelphia (USA), the authors shed light on a subset of the policy-making community and advance the understanding of policy analysis. This paper demonstrates the neglect of an important aspect of analysis (place ontology) in the current public policy process, especially when studying distressed communities, and also provides guidance on addressing this deficiency.
