Summary: Achieving the goals of the European Union Water Framework Directive is challenging, as differentiated water policies based on local conditions are crucial for ecological status. Coercion in spatially differentiated water policies varies based on water quality, with authoritative regulation or threat of regulation for polluted waters, and voluntary instruments for clean waters. Data demand, equality, and legitimacy are important considerations in spatial differentiation of water policies.

Summary: This paper conducts an ex ante evaluation of the plans for the third iteration of the WFD management cycle in the Netherlands and other EU Member States. The study finds that while the majority of water authorities expect to achieve 50% or more of the WFD objectives by 2027, there are still hindering factors that may prevent the ecological ambitions from being met.

Summary: The study analyzed the current pressures of nitrogen and phosphorus emissions to European fresh and coastal waters from 2005 to 2012, as well as the effects of three policy scenarios of nutrient reduction. Results showed that policy measures supporting technological improvements could decrease nutrient export to the seas, improving the ecological status of rivers and lakes but potentially worsening the nutrient imbalance in coastal ecosystems and eutrophication.

Summary: The Natura 2000 network is a system designed to protect Europe's valuable species and habitats, covering a significant percentage of land and marine areas. However, European citizens are largely unaware of this network, which poses a challenge for participatory planning. This study examines the knowledge and characteristics of aware and non-aware citizens, revealing the privileged nature of those with higher awareness levels, as well as gender, rural-urban, and generational disparities.

Summary: This article discusses the wide-ranging negative impacts of hydropower on freshwater ecosystems and calls for environmental responsibility in the hydropower sector. By analyzing the interplay between the EU Water Framework Directive and the Environmental Liability Directive, and using the case of Finland as an example, the article explores the combined framework of these two directives and the challenges in their implementation. The article concludes that although these instruments have the potential to provide a strong framework for environmental responsibility, their realization may be hindered by implementation issues.

Summary: This study investigates the EU battery legislation from 1991 to 2022, highlighting the important role of batteries in decarbonizing road transport. The findings show a significant increase in circular economy aspects and changes in alliances between industry actors and NGOs. External events have contributed to the alignment of economic and environmental interests in establishing a sustainable battery supply chain in the EU. The study argues that batteries can serve as a blueprint for pursuing ambitious environmental policies in other product groups.

Summary: Adaptive management as a policy approach for dealing with uncertainty in environmental governance has gained popularity since the 1970s. Research findings suggest that managers who address both ecological and social uncertainties perform better. Factors for dealing with social uncertainties differ from those linked to knowledge gain and river outcomes, and are crucial for successful project delivery.

Summary: The digitization of manufacturing activities has the potential to bring significant societal benefits in terms of productivity and sustainability. However, the adoption of digital technologies is slower than desired. Governments are taking action to overcome adoption barriers, but the mechanisms vary widely. This paper compares national strategies across the 27 European Union member countries and identifies common focus areas for institutional efforts, while overlooking certain firm-level barriers. No relationship is found between the number of initiatives proposed by each country and their existing level of digitalization. The paper concludes with policy recommendations and future research directions.

Summary: This study compares the different choices and outcomes made by Finland and Sweden in implementing the requirements for collaborative governance of two EU directives. Finland has implemented more detailed and stricter rules, resulting in higher process accountability, while Sweden has delegated final decision making to authorities, achieving a higher degree of institutional independence. The results show that member states' discretion can lead to institutional variation and differing accountability and legitimacy of EU policies, even in similar governance contexts.

Summary: This article presents a methodological approach for the implementation of a macrophyte index in the riverine systems of Greece, which is used to assess the ecological status of the inland waters. The study shows that hydromorphological modifications are the main environmental stressors affecting the ecological quality, while physicochemical stressors are of lesser importance. The research also reveals that the majority of the sites failed to meet the Good ecological quality class according to the Water Framework Directive.

Summary: Proxy data and qualitative information play important roles in water resources and floods management. This research evaluates river water bodies in Greece with characteristic toponyms, comparing them to the implementation of the European Union's Water Framework and Flood Directives. It finds a high degree of correlation between toponyms and water quality and floods, with almost 90% of the water bodies with characteristic names being intermittent and ephemeral ones.

Summary: Comprehensive understanding of the merits of bottom-up urban development is lacking, thus hampering and complicating associated collaborative processes. Therefore, we mapped the social, environmental, and economic values generated by bottom-up developments in two Dutch urban areas, using theory-based evaluation principles. These evaluations provided insights into the values, beneficiaries, and path dependencies between successive values, confirming the expected impact of placemaking on further spatial developments. They also revealed broader impacts of bottom-up endeavors, such as influences on local policies and innovations in urban development.

Summary: Gentrification is a process of upgrading neighborhoods and their socio-economic composition through residential moves and social mobility, but little attention has been paid to the spatial aspect of these moves. This literature review focuses on the origin and destination of moves to and from gentrifying neighborhoods, highlighting gaps in the research. The results suggest that the destination of displaced households has been extensively studied, while the spatial origins of gentrifiers have been overlooked, particularly from outside the city-region.
