Summary: A chitosan-coated luteolin-loaded phytocubosomal system was developed to enhance the therapeutic effects of luteolin in the treatment of glaucoma and ocular inflammation. This system showed nanosized particles with positive charge and improved drug encapsulation. It exhibited sustained drug release and improved anti-oxidant activity. The pharmacodynamic studies demonstrated significant reductions in intraocular pressure and faster recovery capabilities compared to other formulations.

Summary: This study developed heparinized surfaces on PVC substrates using plasma treatment technology and chemical grafting method. The heparinized surfaces not only reduced thrombosis but also decreased side effects of anticoagulants. Sodium alginate and carboxymethyl chitosan interlayers significantly increased the graft density of heparin, improving its anticoagulant effects and hemocompatibility. The CCS/low-molecular-weight heparin surface showed the best anticoagulant properties. The heparinized surfaces prepared in this study have great potential in anticoagulant treatment for medical devices.

Summary: Materials for biomedical applications often need to be coated to enhance their performance, such as their biocompatibility, antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, or to assist the regeneration process and influence cell adhesion. Chitosan, a naturally available substance, meets these criteria. Plasma treatment is an effective solution for altering the surface of synthetic polymer materials to ensure interaction with chitosan. This review focuses on plasma methods for surface modification of polymers to improve chitosan immobilization, including direct and indirect immobilization approaches.

Summary: Surface immobilization of antimicrobial peptides is a promising strategy to prevent biofilm formation on biomaterials. This study demonstrates that direct surface immobilization of Dhvar5 peptide using copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition method improves antimicrobial activity of chitosan ultrathin coatings.

Summary: The processes of interaction between liquid droplets and solid surfaces have attracted the interest of many researchers, as they are important for the development of technologies such as spray cooling, metal hardening, inkjet printing, anti-icing surfaces, fire extinguishing, and fuel spraying. The collisions of droplets with surfaces significantly affect heat transfer conditions and characteristics. Modifying the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of surfaces provides various functional properties to materials, such as enhanced heat transfer, resistance to corrosion and biofouling, and anti-icing. This review paper describes methods for achieving hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, discusses the interaction features of liquid droplets with such surfaces, and explores the existing and potential applications of modified surfaces, as well as current research areas.

Summary: A biodegradable transparent scaffold for culturing corneal endothelial cells was constructed by incorporating chitosan nanoparticles into chitosan/polycaprolactone membranes. The scaffold showed improved transparency and surface wettability, was non-toxic to cells, promoted cell proliferation, and was suitable for corneal endothelial regeneration.

Summary: A chitosan biopolymeric membrane was used as a support for the simultaneous extraction of parabens and fluoroquinolones in the presence of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The optimized conditions provided high enrichment factors and good analytical performance. The method was successfully applied to different water samples. The use of chitosan membrane offers advantages as a biodegradable and versatile support.

Summary: This study successfully removed microcystis aeruginosa in lakes and reservoirs by modifying chitosan as amphiphilic material and using it as a bubble modifier. The modified chitosan showed improved water solubility but decreased thermal stability. Butyl-N-2 hydroxypropyl trimethyl chitosan ammonium chloride was the most effective modifier with an algae removal ratio of 93.47% at a dosage of 1.0 mg/L. The presence of algal organic matter enhanced the overall effect of algae removal, and electrostatic attraction was the primary adhesion mechanism.

Summary: In this study, the surface and interface tension measurements of two ionic liquids were reported. A newly developed experimental setup was used to perform the measurements under high vacuum conditions. The results showed that the surface tension varied under different conditions, which is important for understanding the microscopic parameters determining surface tension and for benchmarking theoretical calculations.

Summary: In this study, a comb-like zwitterionic polymer surfactant with good water solubility, low surface tension, and good foam stability was successfully prepared by modifying the molecular structure of chitosan. The results show that the length and degree of substitution of the alkyl chain have a significant influence on the properties of the surfactants.

Summary: Osteoarthritis (OA), caused by articular cartilage degeneration, is closely associated with joint lubrication dysfunction. Injecting biolubricants into the joint cavity is considered an effective strategy for arthritis treatment. In this study, a biocompatible chitosan-based nanoparticles (NPs) biolubricant (CS-PMPC@DS NPs) with dual functions of lubrication and anti-inflammatory effects was developed. By grafting zwitterionic poly-electrolyte brush poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine, PMPC) onto the NPs via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) strategy, and encapsulating the anti-inflammatory drug (diclofenac sodium, DS) in them, the obtained biolubricant exhibited superior lubrication performance in both artificial joint materials and cartilage contacts, showing great potential for OA treatment.
