Lake Balaton in Hungary is the biggest shallow lake in Europe and has two main invasion pathways: a canal (Sio Canal), which connects the lake to the watershed of the River Danube and fishponds on the south of the lake. The spiny-cheek crayfish was intentionally introduced to Hungary in the 1950s for farming, and was first detected in the wild in the Ujpest-branch of the River Danube in 1985. Its occurrence in the Sio Canal was first reported in 2004, and a dead specimen was found in Lake Balaton. In our study the species is described from a fish pond with a possible connection to the lake.

Summary: This study analyzed the body shape and scale shape of three fish species in the constant watercourses of the suburban region of Budapest using geometric morphometric methods. Significant connections were found between shape and PhACs concentrations, with four PhACs affecting fish body and scale shape. Risk assessment showed that citalopram posed high risk, while propranolol and codeine posed medium risk, and trimetazidine posed low risk level. Additionally, seven other PhACs were categorized with a high risk level, but only citalopram was found to affect fish phenotype amongst the PhACs posing high risk.

Summary: This study conducted a phylogenetic investigation on stream-dwelling freshwater fish (Gobio spp.) individuals collected from the data-deficient Southeastern Carpathian area, discovering seven newly described haplotypes and identifying two valid species (G. obtusirostris, G. gobio) and a haplogroup with doubtful phylogenetic position G. sp. 1. The distribution patterns of the detected lineages align with recent and paleo hydrogeographic features in the Middle-Danubian area.

Summary: Lake Balaton, the largest shallow lake in Central Europe, is affected by the Zala River. The Kis-Balaton Water Protection System (KBWPS) was constructed to improve water quality, but toxic cyanobacterial blooms were still observed. The KBWPS acts as a significant buffering zone, protecting the water quality of Lake Balaton. Regular monitoring of cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in this ecosystem is crucial.
