Summary: Recent developments in medium-voltage silicon and silicon carbide power semiconductor devices are challenging state-of-the-art converter and auxiliary power supply designs. However, there has been little research on high-power converter auxiliary power supply implementation, especially for high-voltage applications. New solutions using MV SiC technology in the auxiliary power supply circuit itself may enable improved efficiency, reliability, simplicity, and compactness. Externally-fed auxiliary power supply concepts could provide further advantages and be competitive solutions in the future.
