Summary: On September 16, 2015, an Mw 8.3 earthquake in north-central Chile triggered a tsunami, leading to the discovery of sedimentary evidence of the 2015 tsunami and a previous one at Pachingo marsh in Tongoy Bay. The older tsunami deposit was thicker and produced by higher flow speeds and depths than the 2015 tsunami, indicating a continuing tsunami hazard in the region.

Physical modeling of spikes during the volcanic tsunami generation

Yibin Liu, Hermann M. Fritz

Summary: This research utilizes a large three-dimensional wave basin to physically model tsunamis generated by underwater volcanic eruptions. A unique volcanic tsunami generator (VTG) is deployed at the bottom of the basin to generate volcanic tsunamis with repeatable source parameters under controlled conditions. The generated tsunamis exhibit smooth dome shapes and concentric vertical spikes, which can be categorized based on the dimensionless VTG parameters into smooth, rough, and splash spikes.

Fragility based characterization of alternative tsunami evacuation buildings in Banda Aceh, Indonesia

Syamsidika, Teuku Muhammad Rasyif, Hermann M. Fritz, Yunita Idris, Ibnu Rusydy

Summary: This research aims to investigate potential structures to serve as alternative tsunami vertical evacuation buildings for tsunami-prone cities like Banda Aceh. Results showed that around 96 to 134 buildings, including schools, hotels, an assembly hall, government offices, and houses, could be used for tsunami vertical evacuation. This offers a significant increase in capacity compared to the current official tsunami escape buildings in Banda Aceh, Indonesia.
