Summary: Globally, droughts have a significant impact on carbon cycling. However, the specific responses of soil respiration to extreme droughts, regulated by seasonal timing and plant functional types, are not well understood. In this study, a manipulative drought experiment was conducted to investigate the importance of drought timing and plant types on soil respiration. The results showed that mid-drought had the greatest negative effects on soil respiration, while early-drought had little effect. Plant functional types also had significant effects on soil respiration under late drought. This study highlights the importance of considering seasonal timing and plant communities in predicting carbon dynamics under future droughts.

Summary: This study conducted a global change experiment in a managed temperate grassland and found that under future climate conditions, soil respiration was higher and the reductions induced by drought were delayed. In the future scenario, extreme drought led to more pronounced reductions and post-drought responses of soil respiration.

Summary: This study investigated the transfer and use of assimilates between trees and rhizosphere under drought conditions and found that irrigation can alleviate the impact of drought on assimilate transfer. Microbes in the rhizosphere play a significant role in absorbing assimilates, while irrigation influences the area of rhizosphere and C allocation within trees.

It also highlights the importance of plant litter as a dominant carbon source for microbial acquisition and the significant influence of latitudinal patterns on predicted carbon limitation.

Summary: Precipitation changes have significant impacts on the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles in terrestrial ecosystems. This study analyzed a large number of observations from field studies to investigate the effects of increased and decreased precipitation on the stoichiometry of plants, soils, and microorganisms. The results showed that plants were more sensitive to decreased precipitation, while soil microbial communities were more sensitive to increased precipitation. Additionally, soil microorganisms maintained stoichiometric homeostasis, while plants tended to follow the stoichiometry of the soils. These findings highlight the importance of considering specific nutrient allocation strategies of plants and microbial communities in predicting ecosystem functions and carbon cycling under future climate change scenarios.

Summary: There is growing evidence that dryland soils could act as substantial carbon sinks at the global scale. However, the contribution of non-biotic and biotic processes to CO2 uptake in drylands remains uncertain. This study aimed to identify factors controlling soil CO2 fluxes and explain the inter-annual variation of cumulative fluxes over the succession. The results suggest that CO2 consumption processes were progressively counterbalanced by biological CO2 production during succession, and these processes could mainly be detected in early successional stages and more generally in drylands.

Summary: By comparing the composition and ecological traits of microbes between Sphagnum- and shrub-dominated peatlands, it was found that slow-growing microbes dominate the studied shrub-dominated peatlands, metabolizing organic matter thirty times slower than the fast-growing microbes in Sphagnum-dominated sites. The shifts in microbial composition induced by high-phenolic shrub/tree vegetation may offset the positive effects of climate change on peatland metabolism over time, improving predictions of long-term climate-carbon feedbacks in peatlands. Dominance of slow-growing microbes in peatlands with predominantly woody vegetation may reduce carbon loss and aid in peatland preservation under climate change.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of short-term changes in precipitation and nitrogen addition on soil respiration in a desert steppe ecosystem. The results showed that these changes had significant positive effects on soil parameters, including nitrogen, organic carbon, and microbial biomass. In addition, they significantly influenced the rates of soil respiration with and without litter. Soil temperature was identified as the most important abiotic factor affecting soil respiration rates.

Summary: The role of soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration as a 'win-win' solution to both climate change and food insecurity is critically examined in this article. The inclusion of SOC saturation in estimations significantly reduces the potential contribution of SOC sequestration to climate change mitigation, and the observed yield effects of increasing SOC are inconsistent. The article argues for a shift towards soil-smart agriculture that takes into account specific local conditions and quantifies multiple soil functions for land sustainability and food security.

Summary: Soil respiration is a major ecosystem carbon flux with a strong relationship to climate, and in Russia, soil properties play a key role in mediating the climate effect on respiration. Vegetation class determines the contribution of autotrophic respiration to the total respiration flux. Estimates suggest that heterotrophic soil respiration in Russia may increase by 12-13% by 2050 and reach 3.5-4.3 Pg C yr(-1) based on different climate scenarios. Disturbances are found to have a minimal impact on increasing heterotrophic soil respiration in Russia, contributing to less than 2% of the total flux.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of compost application on the release of nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon in the soil. The results showed that compost led to a predominance of nitrification, especially in sandy loam soil. Compost also had high available phosphorus content, but with a slow release. After compost application, a significant period of nitrogen immobilization occurred, resulting in a relative deficit of nitrogen. Therefore, it is important to study nutrient release dynamics and fertilization potential in different soil and climate conditions to minimize potential environmental impacts.
