Summary: Boron has been detected on Mars in calcium-sulfate veins found within clay mineral rich rocks on Mars by the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Curiosity rover using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis. The discovery of boron on Mars in proximity to phyllosilicatebearing bedrock may have strong implications for potential past prebiotic conditions on Mars.

Summary: X-ray diffraction patterns of Martian mudstones acquired by Chemistry & Mineralogy X-Ray Diffraction (CheMin) suggest that the detected smectites have poor crystallinity. In this study, synthetic saponite samples with variable crystallinity were characterized and their spectral features were studied using various techniques. The results indicate that different vibration spectroscopy techniques can provide insights into the structural ordering of smectite and their formation conditions on Mars.

Summary: White mica is commonly used for radiogenic dating in faults, but complexities in microstructural and chemical evolution, mixing of grains, and volume diffusion can result in inaccurate K-Ar ages. Studying specimens from European Alpine accretionary wedge sheds light on resetting processes of white mica and shows that increasing recrystallization with higher metamorphic grade can affect the isotopic system. The importance of recrystallization as a physico-chemical process for age resetting is highlighted, with reliable age information only achievable through complete resetting of the smallest grain fraction at peak metamorphic conditions.

Summary: The spectral reflectance properties of nontronite were studied under simulated Mars surface conditions, as well as after heating to different temperatures. The data obtained provides insights into the conditions nontronite may have experienced on the Martian surface. Nontronite exhibits unique spectral features, including absorption bands associated with Fe3+, H2O/OH, and Fe-OH. Heating in a low-pressure CO2 environment leads to the loss of Fe-OH features, while both OH and H2O gradually decrease with increasing temperature. The absorption features associated with nontronite can be used to infer its history and conditions it was exposed to. Dehydration and dehydroxylation can occur at temperatures below 300 degrees C.

Summary: The study evaluates the capabilities of VSWIR imaging spectroscopy in the Samail Ophiolite, Oman. Findings show that VSWIR spectroscopy can be used to identify the time order of different alteration events, record rock compositions, and reflect changes in rock pressure and temperature. Spectroscopy can discriminate between carbonate and serpentine phases, as well as carbonate solid solutions.
