Unlike other tumors, lung cancer appears to be poorly sensitive to immunotherapy. We have recently demonstrated an alternative pathway of lung cancer immunosurveillance. Our data indicate a failure of the adaptive immune system to mediate the immunosurveillance of lung cancer and emphasize the prominent role of natural killer cells in this setting.

A Simple Prioritization Change to Lung Transplant Allocation May Result in Improved Outcomes

Stephanie H. Chang, Luis Angel, Deane E. Smith, Julius Carillo, Darya Rudym, Melissa Lesko, Kimberly Sureau, Robert A. Montgomery, Nader Moazami, Zachary N. Kon

Summary: This study evaluates whether a modest change prioritizing high-LAS lung transplant candidates would lower wait list mortality. The results show that this simple prioritization change can decrease wait list mortality without significantly affecting posttransplant 1-year survival.

Lobectomy for Hemorrhagic Lobar Infarction in a Patient

Travis C. Geraci, Navneet Narula, Deane E. Smith, Andre L. Moreira, Zachary N. Kon, Stephanie H. Chang

Summary: Patients with severe COVID-19 are prone to a strong inflammatory response and thrombotic complications. Pulmonary vein thrombosis, while rare, can lead to pulmonary congestion, infarction, and potentially mortality. This case report highlights the development of hemorrhagic infarction in a COVID-19 patient requiring ECMO, due to inferior vein thrombosis and subsequent lobectomy.

High Lung Transplant Center Volume Is Associated With Increased Survival in Hospitalized Patients

Neel K. Ranganath, Jad Malas, Stacey Chen, Deane E. Smith, Stephanie H. Chang, Melissa B. Lesko, Luis F. Angel, Bonnie E. Lonze, Zachary N. Kon

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of pretransplant hospital admission status on posttransplant mortality, and found an association between admission status and posttransplant mortality. High-volume centers were independently associated with improved survival.

Efficiency Quality Index (EQI)-Implementing a Novel Metric That Delivers Overall Institutional Excellence and Value for Patients

Robert J. Cerfolio, Stephanie H. Chang

Summary: In the past decade, healthcare systems have shifted focus towards improving patient outcomes and quality, with the creation of the Efficiency Quality Index (EQI) to better assess quality and value. The unique aspect of the EQI is the involvement of physicians who perform procedures in determining metrics, ensuring an accurate and fair measurement of performance and outcomes.

Pulmonary Pathology of End-Stage COVID-19 Disease in Explanted Lungs and Outcomes After Lung Transplantation

Abdallah Flaifel, Benjamin Kwok, Jane Ko, Stephanie Chang, Deane Smith, Fang Zhou, Luis A. Chiriboga, Briana Zeck, Neil Theise, Darya Rudym, Melissa Lesko, Luis Angel, Andre Moreira, Navneet Narula

Summary: This study reports on the clinical course, pulmonary pathology, and outcomes after lung transplantation in three patients with chronic respiratory failure due to postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The major pathological findings in the lung explants suggest ongoing fibrosis, prominent macrophage infiltration, neoangiogenesis, and microvascular thrombosis.
