Summary: Bladder cancer in veterinary medicine, particularly in companion animals, is still poorly understood but recent advances in identifying tumor markers and introducing targeted therapies have shown promise. This review focuses on small animal oncology and provides an update on the field, drawing comparisons with bladder cancer in humans and experimental models of the disease.

Summary: This study retrospectively assessed the therapeutic outcomes of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with advanced upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) after radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). The results showed that adjuvant chemotherapy significantly improved overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and disease-free survival in advanced UTUC patients.

Summary: The study revealed a close association between preoperative renal function and survival outcomes in patients with upper tract urothelial carcinoma undergoing radical nephroureterectomy, with poorer preoperative renal function correlating with lower survival rates.

Summary: By sequencing genes in 15 UTUC patients treated by RNU, it was found that the majority of patients had a clonal relationship between UTUC and subsequent UCB, supporting the idea that UCBs following UTUC surgery are primarily clonally derived recurrences.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the molecular mechanism and tumor immune profile of HR repair genes in upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) patients and their prognostic value. The study found that 5.01% of Chinese UTUC patients had germline HRR gene mutations, and there was a correlation between HRR gene mutations and immune activities and recurrence rates.

Summary: A study was conducted to investigate the clinical and epidemiological features of patients with upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma in areas with and without arsenic water contamination. The results showed a poorer prognosis in patients from arsenic water endemic areas, especially in terms of disease-free survival for early stage disease.

Summary: This study evaluated the CT characteristics and detectability of carcinoma in situ (CIS) of the upper urinary tract. The common abnormal finding of pure CIS was wall thickening, and a minority of cases presented as mass-forming lesions, mostly located in the renal collecting system.

Summary: Upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is a rare but aggressive malignancy occurring in the renal pelvis or ureter. UTUC is often diagnosed at an advanced stage due to non-specific symptoms and the lack of early biomarkers. However, microRNAs (miRNAs) show promise as novel biomarkers for optimizing the diagnosis and prognosis of UTUC.

Summary: Zinc finger and SCAN domain containing 4 (ZSCAN4) is downregulated in muscle-invasive bladder cancer and its low expression is significantly correlated with tumor progression, metastasis, and vascular invasion in both upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) and urinary bladder urothelial carcinoma (UBUC). Furthermore, low expression of ZSCAN4 serves as an independent negative prognostic factor for both diseases. Gene ontology analysis reveals that ZSCAN4 and its co-downregulated genes are associated with the mitotic cell cycle.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of non-invasive tests in the diagnosis of upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC). Among the 10,084 screened publications, 25 were included in the analysis. Most of the studies had small sample sizes and heterogeneous control groups. Voided urinary cytology was the most commonly used test, with low sensitivity and good specificity. Fluorescence in situ hybridization in diagnostic cytology showed higher sensitivity and similarly good specificity. Other urine or blood tests had limited research and varied results. Currently, there is a lack of high-quality data confirming the effectiveness of non-invasive tests in the diagnosis of UTUC.

Summary: This retrospective study analyzed data from 35 dogs with urethral carcinoma and found that urethral obstruction and urinary tract infection were adverse prognostic factors. A multimodal therapeutic approach should be considered to improve outcomes in these patients.

Summary: The study found that a simplified five-item frailty index (sFI) is clinically valuable for predicting postoperative complications and prognosis in elderly UTUC patients. Patients with high sFI scores had significantly lower overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS), and sFI score was identified as an independent prognostic factor for OS and CSS. The developed predictive model and survival risk classification system improve accuracy in clinical decision-making.
