Background Face-to-face interviews by trained field workers are commonly used in household surveys. However, this data collection method is labor-intensive, time-consuming, expensive, prone to interviewer and recall bias and not easily scalable to increase sample representativeness. Objective To explore the feasibility of using text messaging to collect information on infant and young child feeding practice in rural China. Methods Our study was part of a clustered randomized controlled trial that recruited 591 mothers of children aged 12 to 29 months in rural China. We used the test-retest method: first we collected data through face-to-face interviews and then through text messages. We asked the same five questions on standard infant and young child feeding indicators for both methods and asked caregivers how they fed their children yesterday. We assessed the response rate of the text messaging method and compared data agreement of the two methods. Finding In the text messaging survey, the response rate for the first question and the completion rate were 56.5% and 48.7%, respectively. Data agreement between the two methods was excellent for whether the baby was breastfed yesterday (question 1) (kappa, kappa = 0.81), moderate for the times of drinking infant formula, fresh milk or yoghurt yesterday (question 2) (intraclass correlation coefficient, ICC = 0.46) and whether iron fortified food or iron supplement was consumed (question 3) (kappa = 0.44), and poor for 24-hour dietary recall (question 4) (ICC = 0.13) and times of eating solid and semisolid food yesterday (question 5) (ICC = 0.06). There was no significant difference in data agreement between the two surveys at different time intervals. For infant and young child feeding indicators from both surveys, continued breastfeeding at 1 year (P = 1.000), continued breastfeeding at 2 years (P = 0.688) and minimum meal frequency (P = 0.056) were not significantly different, whereas minimum dietary diversity, minimum accepted diet and consumption of iron-rich or iron fortified foods were significantly different (P < 0.001). Conclusions The response rate for our text messaging survey was moderate compared to response rate of other studies using text messaging method and the data agreement between the two methods varied for different survey questions and infant and young child feeding indicators. Future research is needed to increase the response rate and improve data validity of text messaging data collection.

The Role of Health Technologies in Multicomponent Primary Care Interventions: Systematic Review

Geronimo Jimenez, David Matchar, Choon Huat Gerald Koh, Rianne van der Kleij, Niels H. Chavannes, Josip Car

Summary: The study identified that some multicomponent interventions aimed at enhancing primary care include technology-based innovations, with the most commonly used technologies being electronic health records, data monitoring technologies, and online portals. These technologies aim to improve continuity and comprehensiveness of care, leading to increased patient satisfaction, more primary care visits, better health prevention education, and improved prescribing practices.

Health-related quality of life and chronic wound characteristics among patients with chronic wounds treated in primary care: A cross-sectional study in Singapore

Xiaoli Zhu, Maja Magdalena Olsson, Ram Bajpai, Krister Jarbrink, Wern Ee Tang, Josip Car

Summary: This study investigated the impact of chronic wounds on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and found that arterial ulcers had the most significant negative impact on HRQoL. Factors such as age, ethnicity, wound type, exudate level, and wound duration were associated with HRQoL related to mobility. The findings can be utilized to enhance healthcare delivery for chronic wound patients and improve their HRQoL.

Health app policy: international comparison of nine countries' approaches

Anna Essen, Ariel D. Stern, Christoffer Bjerre Haase, Josip Car, Felix Greaves, Dragana Paparova, Steven Vandeput, Rik Wehrens, David W. Bates

Summary: There is a global effort to develop policy frameworks for regulating the use of health apps. While countries are taking different paths, there is international convergence in terms of requirements for transparency, health content, interoperability, and privacy and security. However, the large number of apps in the market poses challenges for clinicians and patients, and more regulatory work is needed to address issues such as reimbursement, safety, and privacy.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of epidemiological health-risk behaviors and mental well-being among Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) university students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results showed that a large proportion of university students consumed sugar-sweetened beverages and snacks/fast food daily, while less than half of them consumed the recommended daily amounts of fruit/vegetables. The prevalence of physical inactivity and low mental well-being was also significant. Country and body mass index were found to have a significant correlation with these health-risk behaviors and mental well-being.

Effects of fun-seeking and external locus of control on smoking behaviour: a cross-sectional analysis on a cohort of working men in Singapore

Kar Fye Alvin Lee, Eun Hee Lee, Adam Charles Roberts, Josip Car, Chee Kiong Soh, Georgios Christopoulos

Summary: The combined effects of behavioral inhibition and behavioral activation, as well as locus of control, were examined on different categories of smoking behavior. The fun-seeking aspect of behavioral activation was found to be a unique predictor of daily smoking, while external locus of control also played a significant role. External locus of control mediated the relationship between fun-seeking and smoking behavior. Overall, these findings suggest a more complex relationship between fun-seeking, external locus of control, and daily smoking behavior than previously shown.
