The application of Thermally (TL) and Optically (OSL) Stimulated Luminescence on bricks used as building material has allowed solving an chronological issue in the field of historical building dating. The possibility to use one or more methodologies of dating is closely related to the luminescent and granulometric characteristics of the sample. Using some brick samples collected in the church of Sain Seurin in Bordeaux (France), this paper discusses the implications and the possibility to use different approaches and techniques for dating. With this aim luminescence measurements were performed on both polymineral fine grain and quartz inclusion phases extracted from each brick. For Equivalent Dose (ED) and consequently age determination, TL on mixed fine grain fraction (FG), OSL on quartz inclusions (QI) and on mixed fine grain (FG*) fraction, were used. The results obtained suggest the advantage of using OSL technique on fine grain fraction cleaned up by IR stimulation (FG*), but the use of quartz inclusion represents indeed a good alternative.

Effect of ionizing radiation on the colorimetric properties of PVA-GTA Xylenol Orange Fricke gel dosimeters

Salvatore Gallo, Stefania Pasquale, Cristina Lenardi, Ivan Veronese, Anna Maria Gueli

Summary: In this study, Fricke gel dosimeters were prepared and irradiated to investigate color changes and oxidation processes. The results showed no significant differences in the oxidation effect on the dosimeters within the investigated dose range. This study suggested that colorimetric analysis, combined with the spectrophotometric one, can be a useful tool for characterizing the samples.

IoT-Based Microclimate and Vibration Monitoring of a Painted Canvas on a Wooden Support in the Monastero of Santa Caterina (Palermo, Italy)

Carlo Trigona, Eliana Costa, Giuseppe Politi, Anna M. Gueli

Summary: The main objective of this work is to study the performance of an IoT measurement and monitoring system in the field of cultural heritage conservation, and to apply this system to monitor a 19th century artwork. It is important to measure not only microclimatic parameters such as temperature and humidity, but also vibrations that can cause degradation phenomena in these artworks, considering the wooden structure.

Estimating the long-term slip rate of active normal faults: The case of the Paganica Fault (Central Apennines, Italy)

Irene Puliti, Stefano Pucci, Fabio Villani, Massimiliano Porreca, Lucilla Benedetti, Gaetano Robustelli, Anna Gueli, Giuseppe Stella

Summary: This study investigated the footwall of the Paganica normal fault, the source of the 2009 L'Aquila earthquake in Italy, using integrated geological and geomorphological approaches. The results showed that the fault activity led to long-term fluvial incision and footwall uplift. The research also found an increasing relief growth and suggested that the fault's ongoing activity might trigger larger seismic events.

Organ dose in CT: Comparison between measurements and computational methods

Martina Pace, Elisa Bonanno, Giuseppina Rita Borzi, Nina Cavalli, Alessia D'Anna, Anna Maria Gueli, Giuseppe Stella, Lucia Zirone, Camelo Marino

Summary: This study compares two methods for organ dose evaluation in CT: an experimental method using radiochromic films and a computational method using commercial software. The results show the potential of EBT-3 in CT patient dosimetry, as its lower angular dependence compensates for low sensitivity in the diagnostic dose range compared to XR-QA2.

A Living Sensor Based on Sansevieria Plant for Measurement of UV-A Radiation

Carlo Trigona, Ivana Puglisi, Andrea Baglieri, Anna Maria Gueli

Summary: This research focuses on developing a sensor using Sansevieria plants to measure UV-A radiation. The sensor utilizes soils, plants, metabolic processes, and bacterial activities to overcome environmental pollution caused by silicon-based solutions. The sensor does not emit CO2 during production and can reduce existing CO2 in the environment through natural photosynthesis. The study introduces the concept of a living sensor based on Sansevieria and analyzes its performance in measuring radiation.

Summary: Before performing multiple brain metastases single-isocenter stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatment, it is recommended to conduct end-to-end tests. In this study, the results of the tests using ionization chamber (IC) and polymer gel were reported. The findings showed that using a single isocenter for multiple lesions can reduce treatment time without compromising accuracy.
